Time flies

In the new year there are several cars that can literally blow out fifteen candles. In (often business) car circles we talk about a youngtimer. You can drive them for business at a reduced rate!
Dozens of models will be fifteen years old in 2024 and of course not every model is equally attractive to drive as a youngtimer. Some are still difficult to find and there are also models that were not even available new here in the first place. We therefore select a selection from the party favors, leaving quite a bit of something for everyone. By the way, some models were already unveiled in 2008, but only appeared on the road here in 2009.
Alfa Romeo Mito
We immediately start with a mischievous little one, who managed to put his hands together upon his appearance. The Alfa Romeo Mito was a bit of an un-Alfa-like car with its modest size and yet its appearance was truly Alfa. The latter has done him good, because in 2024 it is still quite a striking appearance. One that you can now have on your doorstep for around €3,000.
BMW X1
Believe it or not, the BMW X1 has only been with us for fifteen years. The first generation was released in 2009, but the X1 has now become an indispensable part of the range and is already in its third generation. The range of 2009 X1s is quite limited, but if you find one you can get it for less than $10,000. Do you have a soft spot for BMW, but do convertibles appeal to you more? The second generation BMW Z4 will also turn fifteen in 2024!
Ford Kuga
We recently had another one on the roller bench: the first Ford Kuga. The SUV brother of the Focus is also turning fifteen. That is to say, the oldest copies that are for sale, because the unveiling took place in 2008. The Kuga dates from a time when SUVs were on the rise and Ford cleverly responded to the new trend at the time. Yet the first Kuga was not a huge sales hit here in the Netherlands. The offer from 2009 is therefore not too exuberant. Count on at least around €9,000 if you want one.
Mercedes-Benz E-class (W212)
In the second half of the ’00s’, Mercedes-Benz took a more angular design direction and this was reflected in the E-class in 2009. Then the W212 generation appeared and with its sharp folds it broke quite firmly with its much rounder predecessor. If that was (and still is) your taste, you can drive it as a youngtimer this year. You can easily spend around €10,000 for it, whether you want a diesel or dare to go for one with a high mileage.
Nissan 370Z
Time for some sportier stuff again! Nissan made a nice contribution in that regard, fifteen years ago. Then came the successor to the equally cool 350Z. Broadly speaking, the 370Z was somewhat similar to its predecessor and again there was a wonderful V6 in the nose, but as the name indicated, it was now a 3.7. Furthermore, the design of the 370Z was a bit ‘busier’ than that of the 350Z, that must be to your taste. If that is the case, you can already withdraw about twenty guilders from your savings account to hunt for an early copy.
Peugeot 3008/5008
We switch to a completely different car in every respect. Or rather, cars, because it’s a set. We are talking about the Peugeot 3008 and Peugeot 5008. The 3008 in particular was a bit of a shock for some when it appeared, because it was not an MPV in the traditional form, like its brother 5008 was. Moreover, the design was not universally appreciated. In that respect, the 5008 may be a more logical choice in 2024 if you are looking for an affordable (from around €3,000) and spacious car that also looks a bit fresh.
Porsche Panamera
Quite recently, Porsche unveiled the third generation of the Panamera. The model will celebrate its anniversary in 2024, because in April it will already be fifteen years since the first one was unveiled. It was quite a ‘thing’ at the time that Porsche came up with a low model with rear doors. He certainly wasn’t to everyone’s taste. It turned out to be a keeper, because the Panamera became a commercial success. It will never be really cheap; you can easily spend about thirty euros for the very first models, in 2025 some cheaper versions will become youngtimers.
Subaru Legacy
A permanent fixture in the Japanese range, that is how we can describe the Subaru Legacy. In that respect he lives up to his name. The fifth generation came onto the market in 2009 and we were able to admire it here in the Netherlands late that year at the dealer. He went into it with a slightly flashier appearance than its predecessor, although the real distinguishing element remained hidden under the hood. You can now pick one up for less than €10,000 and enjoy that wonderful boxer hum every day.
Toyota Prius
You would probably say it because of its recognizable shape; the third Toyota Prius, unveiled in 2009, happily continued where its predecessor left off. Not surprising, because it was well received worldwide. With some fresher lighting and more folds in its slightly larger body, the ‘XW30’ went on the hunt for more people who were looking for practical and, above all, very economical transport. With success: in the Netherlands, partly thanks to the first plug-in, this would even become by far the most popular Prius. The used car range is therefore very wide. It starts around €7,000.
Volkswagen Polo
Finally, we come to the undoubtedly most common car that will achieve youngtimer status in 2024: the previous Volkswagen Polo. Not only the most successful Polo ever in the Netherlands, it is also still one of the most sought-after used cars. A compact all-rounder that has proven itself widely and you can also drive it for business purposes in the new year for 35 percent of the current value. This means, if we take a look at the asking prices of the oldest Polo’s of that generation, that you can be ready for around €140 tax addition per month.
