Rental car at a holiday destination has become much less expensive

You may have noticed it on holiday in recent years: renting a car has become much more expensive this decade. Over the past year, the average price actually dropped slightly again. This is evident from figures from the comparison site EasyTerra.

Life did not become cheaper in the 1920s and that is certainly true when we look at rental car rates. These rose rapidly due to corona, because rental companies wanted to catch up after the lockdowns and often faced a shortage of cars at the same time. The worst financial suffering for holidaymakers with a rental car now seems to have passed; In the past year, prices fell slightly on average again. According to EasyTerra rental cars were on average almost 16 percent cheaper in 2023 than a year earlier.

The prices for rental cars obviously vary considerably per holiday destination. Here in Europe, for example, it is relatively cheap in Bulgaria, where the average price is €26.01 per day. The cheapest is Serbia, at €25.13 per day. It can be even less cheaper, but then you have to go to the other side of the world: you are in Brazil EasyTerra on average ready for €24.60 per day. At the other end of the price spectrum is Iceland. With an average of €116.33 per day for a rental car, this is the most expensive holiday destination.

Dutch people most often rent a car in Spain, with Alicante in first place. Malaga, Mallorca and Ibiza are also in the top 5 when it comes to the number of cars rented to Dutch people. Portugal is also represented with Faro in second place. Dutch people most often rent a B-segment car (for example a Volkswagen Polo or Opel Corsa), after which compact middle class cars are the most popular. In third place are the smallest rental cars, such as the Fiat 500 and Kia Picanto.
