This is where the iPhone 15 is made (and it’s not in China)

Most Apple devices are still made in China, but there are more Apple assembly facilities around the world. The 6.1-inch iPhone 15 is made in one of them.

The Brazilian blog MacMagazine discovered that the 6.1-inch iPhone 15 is made at Foxconn Brazil in São Paulo, Brazil. Apple itself has not confirmed the news and there is no explicit evidence of it on Apple’s website. But Apple’s online store in Brazil does give customers a clue.

Anyone who looks at the URL of the payment page for the iPhone 15 will see that the part number ends in ‘BR/A’. This number is used to identify Apple products that are assembled in Brazil. Most products are labeled ‘BE/A’ or ‘BZ/A’, indicating that they have been imported for sale in the country.

Not for the first time

Interestingly, Apple has once again opted for only the 6.1-inch iPhone model to be made in Brazil. That was also the case with the iPhone 14. The iPhone 15 Plus and both Pro models sold in the country are still imported from China. This may have to do with the fact that the entry-level model is most popular in Brazil, judging by the high prices of the iPhone 15 there.

Brazil imposes high taxes on imported products. That is why some companies choose to assemble their products in Brazil. They then have to pay less tax to sell those products. The 128GB iPhone 15 launched in Brazil for 7,299 Brazilian real (about $1,345), but is now available in select stores for just 5,399 real (about $995), probably partly because they’re made there.

Apple is using more and more places for assembly

The fact that the iPhone 15 is made in Brazil is good news for Brazilian customers, but it is also beneficial for Apple. That’s not just because they might sell more iPhones that way. With assembly facilities in other regions, Apple is less dependent on China and can avoid shortages in local markets.

In addition to Brazil, Apple has also invested in assembly facilities in India and Vietnam. Last year, Indian customers could buy an iPhone 15 made in India on the first day of sales. This fits within Apple’s new strategy, which is intended to be less dependent on just a few factories. It regularly happens that production does not go according to plan, including this new Apple product.
