I bought an overpriced Apple cable – but I had no choice

After switching from an iPhone 12 to an iPhone 15 Plus, I had to buy an overpriced Apple cable. But I had no choice.

I bought a much too expensive Apple cable

When I switched from an iPhone 12 to an iPhone 15 Plus, I also immediately switched from a Lightning to a USB C connection. I had taken that into account. A USB C cable for charging was included with the iPhone 15 Plus and I could still use my old charging cable for my TrackPad and Magic Keyboard. But I forgot something…

I have a Zoom iQ7 that I sometimes use for rehearsal recordings. This handy microphone has a Lightning connection and I can no longer use it. The Zoom iQ7 costs 115 euros – a shame never to use it again. An alternative is the Zoom Am7 of 99 euros, which does have a USB C connection. Not exactly cheap. So an Apple cable was my cheapest choice.

Cheaper but still not cheap

I needed an Apple cable of a few centimeters. An adapter from USB C to Lightning, with which I could still connect my Zoom iQ7 to my iPhone 15 Plus. I expected that I could easily find such a cable and that it would cost me a few euros.

Finding it easy turned out to be true. The Apple cable is officially called an ‘Apple USB-C to Lightning adapter’ and is widely available. Just not for a few euros, but for a considerable 35 euros.

I found it quite surprising that such a small cable had to be so expensive. Presumably, Apple is trying to make some extra money in this way from people like me, who are left with otherwise unusable accessories after a switch. This Apple cable is certainly not cheap, but it is my cheapest option to continue using the Zoom iQ7.

If you search further, you will find some alternative adapter cables. But in most cases there is also a warning: the cables are only suitable for charging, and not for audio and video. So not an option for my Zoom iQ7. If you want to be sure that it works properly, you really need to buy an official cable from Apple. With all alternative gradients it is uncertain whether it will work. So I had no choice and bought a much too expensive Apple cable…
