‘Germany working to stop import duties on Chinese cars’

The German government is trying to prevent higher import duties on Chinese electric cars from coming into effect, or at least weaken them if a complete stop is not possible. Bloomberg news agency reports this based on insiders.

Officials in Berlin are optimistic that the European Union will find a solution in direct talks with China, the news agency writes. Europe’s largest economy believes the country has allies within the bloc.

The European Commission said on Wednesday that China practices unfair competition by subsidizing its own manufacturers. If nothing changes, there will be additional levies of more than 38 percent from July 4. According to German transport minister Volker Wissing, the EU is in danger of becoming embroiled in a trade war with China. That country is a very important sales market for Germany.
