iPhone 17, Mac and Apple Watch will be very thin (but do you want that too?)

Apple seems to be planning to make the iPhone, MacBook Pro and Apple Watch a lot thinner by 2025, but is that good news? You need to know this.

iPhone, MacBook Pro and Apple Watch are getting thinner

Last month, Apple presented the thinnest Apple product ever with the new M4 iPad Pro. At 5.1mm thick, the 13-inch M4 iPro Pro is even thinner than the iPod nano.

Apparently Apple has plans to move in the same direction with the rest of the product line. This means that the iPhone 17, Apple Watch and MacBook Pro will all become thinner in 2025.

A new class of Apple devices

In the latest edition of the Power Onnewsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that the new iPad Pro is the start of a new class of Apple devices. The intention is for these products to be the thinnest and lightest products in their category.

Gurman hereby confirms an earlier report The Information. He says the iPhone 17 series will get a new model with a whole new design that is significantly thinner than current iPhone designs. He also notes that Apple is working on new versions of the MacBook Pro and iPad Pro that are thinner than the current generation.

How sturdy are the thinner devices?

In the most recent redesign in 2021, the MacBook Pro has actually become thicker and heavier. That redesign was accompanied by the transition from the MacBook Pro to Apple Silicon and the return of ports such as MagSafe, HDMI and an SD slot. That trend is now coming to an end and is even being reversed.

It is still unclear when the thinner versions of the MacBook Pro and Apple Watch will be released. It is clear that the M4 iPad Pro is the start of Apple’s new design for the next generation. The question is whether these devices are sturdy enough, as the iPhone 6 was far too easy to bend years ago. Fortunately, that problem seems to have already been resolved with the iPad Pro 2024.

It is therefore expected that Apple will also be able to guarantee the robustness of the devices with the thinner iPhone, Mac and Apple Watch. Especially with the iPhone and Apple Watch, it is important that the devices do not bend easily. Otherwise, an iPhone will quickly break in your pocket and the Apple Watch should not bend with your wrist. We won’t know until 2025 whether this will become a problem, just like with the iPhone 6, but the first reviews of the iPad Pro 2024 suggest not.
