Apple is working on a cheaper Vision Pro – here’s what you need to know

Apple has reportedly stopped work on the Vision Pro 2 to focus entirely on producing a cheaper Vision.

Apple is working on a cheaper Vision Pro

Until now, it was believed that Apple had plans to split the product line into two models, namely a Pro model and a cheaper model. But according to The Information Apple has deprioritized the Vision Pro 2 over the past year and gradually assigned fewer employees to the project.

Apple will first focus on lowering the cost of the first model’s components and producing a better display for the second model. Apple has now informed at least one supplier that work on the next-generation Vision Pro headset has been suspended. Instead, the company is working on a cheaper Vision with fewer features.

Just as expensive as an iPhone Pro Max

Apple has reportedly started developing a cheaper Vision in 2022, codenamed ‘N109’. This model should be about as expensive as a high-end iPhone. Apple is currently selling the current iPhone 15 Pro Max for one price from 1479 euros.

Initially, Apple aimed to release the cheaper Vision in 2024. However, there were problems finding ways to reduce the cost of the model without sacrificing too many features. This will probably push the release date to the end of 2025.

Apple wants to keep the most expensive parts

Apple wants to keep the high-quality display parts of the Vision Pro for the cheap model, but they are among the most expensive parts of the device. Reports have previously appeared that the cheaper Vision will have the same high-quality displays as the Vision Pro. The new model does get fewer cameras, a simpler headband and smaller speakers. The device will also be at least a third lighter than the Vision Pro.

Meanwhile, Apple is experiencing disappointing sales of the expensive Vision Pro. A supplier that makes parts for the Vision Pro reduced production by 50 percent in May. This was necessary after he received a forecast from Apple that predicted lower demand than expected. That supplier’s information suggests that Apple has produced no more than 500,000 Vision Pros this year. There are also no plans to produce many more until August.

The Information does say that it’s still possible that Apple will resume work on a second-generation Vision Pro headset in the near future.
