1. Make files available offline
When you go on vacation and you are not sure whether you will be able to access the internet, it is wise to make the files you need available offline. That is where we start these iPhone tips. In Dropbox, making your files available offline is very easy:
- Open the Dropbox app;
- Navigate to the file you want to make available offline;
- Tap the three dots next to it;
- Enable ‘Make available offline’.
You can now access the files you’ve made available offline anytime, anywhere, whether you have an internet connection or not.
2. Upload photos and videos automatically
Number two of these iPhone tips will take some of the work off your hands. Because if you want to make sure that all your photos and videos end up in your Dropbox, you can use an automatic upload function there. Fortunately, this is also very easy to set up:
- Open the Dropbox app;
- Tap ‘Account’ at the bottom;
- Tap on ‘Camera Uploads’;
- Tap ‘Enable Camera Uploads’.
On this page, you can decide whether you want to save all photos to your Dropbox, whether you want to save only photos or also videos, and in which format HEIC photos should be saved. If you want to prevent mobile data from being used during backup, leave the option ‘Use mobile data to backup’ disabled.
3. Scan documents in
Number three of these iPhone tips is useful for anyone who likes to store paper documents in Dropbox. The Dropbox app has a built-in document scanner that is perfect for digitizing paper documents. Scanning and saving to Dropbox is done in one go. Here’s how it works:
- Open the Dropbox app;
- Tap the plus sign at the bottom;
- Tap ‘Scan Document’;
- If necessary, allow Dropbox to access the camera.
Now you actually take a picture of the desired document, after which the app automatically improves the result. If you are not satisfied with the result, you can still adjust it to your own insight.
4. File sharing and collaboration
Files and folders that you have in Dropbox can be easily shared with others. Collaborating on files also becomes a breeze. All you need is the other person’s contact information. Then proceed as follows:
- Open the Dropbox app;
- Tap ‘Files’ at the bottom;
- Go to the file or folder you want to share;
- Tap the three dots behind it and then tap ‘Share’;
- Choose whether the person can only view or also edit;
- Copy the link or share the link directly with the person concerned.
5. Secure your files
Number five of this week’s iPhone tips provides some extra security. You can protect your files in the Dropbox app with Face ID or Touch ID, so you can be sure that they are always safe. To do this, you first need to protect your files with a passcode. After that, you can easily turn Face ID or Touch ID on or off. Here’s how to do it:
- Open the Dropbox app;
- Tap ‘Account’ at the bottom right;
- Tap the gear icon at the top right;
- Under ‘Passcode Lock’, tap ‘Turn on Passcode’;
- Enter and confirm a four-digit access code.
The passcode is now set. In Settings you will now see the option ‘Face ID’ (or Touch ID, depending on your iPhone), which you can easily enable.
6. Put a widget on your home screen
We’ll wrap up these iPhone tips with a way to use Dropbox even faster and more effectively. You can do that with a widget on your home screen. Dropbox offers six different widgets, so choose the one that adds the most value for you. For example, a widget that lets you scan a document directly is very useful. Here’s how to add them:
- Long press on an empty part of your home screen;
- Tap the plus sign at the top left;
- Tap ‘Search widgets’ and type ‘dropbox’;
- Tap ‘Dropbox’ and choose one of the six widgets;
- Finally, tap ‘Add Widget’.
