Apple is introducing a new button this year, which we will see again on the iPhone 16 and the iPhone 16 Plus. This is what we already know about the new button.
Camera button on the iPhone 16 (Plus)
It has been clear for some time that Apple is working on a new button for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. We will probably also see the button on the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, this year’s top devices. According to rumors, there will be a camera button (in English Capture Button) to the new generations of iPhone. The button is – as the name suggests – intended for taking photos and videos.
The camera button on the iPhone 16 (Plus) and iPhone 16 Pro (Max) reportedly works with vibration motors. So you can’t physically press the button, but you will feel a short vibration when you press the button. We previously saw the same technology on the home button of the iPhone 7, iPhone 8, iPhone SE 2020 and iPhone SE 2022. Rumors now reveal the functions that you can link to the new button on the iPhone 16.
New camera button features
If rumors are to be believed, the camera button will be one of the most advanced buttons Apple has ever made. For example, the button recognizes multiple gestures, which activate different functions. This should make it easier to take photos and videos. These functions are coming to the new button on the iPhone 16 (Plus) and the iPhone 16 Pro (Max):
- Press the camera button lightly: focuses the camera;
- Press the camera button hard: take a photo or video;
- Swipe left and right on the camera button: zoom in and out;
- A still unknown gesture to switch between taking photos and videos.
The button is placed on the right side of the iPhone 16 (Plus) and iPhone 16 Pro (Max), below the lock button. To easily operate the button, you have to hold the phone horizontally, which means you take photos and videos in landscape mode. That’s no coincidence, because these images are better viewed on the Vision Pro.
iPhone 16 gets another button
In addition to the camera button, the iPhone 16 is being expanded with another button, because the action button is coming to the device. We previously saw this button on the iPhone 15 Pro (Max) and the Apple Watch Ultra (2). With the action button, you can choose which functions are activated when you press the button. With iOS 17, you can choose from a number of standard features, but in iOS 18 even more options are added.
Other changes to the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus include the new A18 chip, Apple Intelligence and 8GB of RAM for all AI functions. We won’t have to wait long for the next iPhone, because Apple will present the iPhone 16 next month.
