The AirTag gets a new function in iOS 18.2, because you can then temporarily share the location of the tracker. That’s how it works!
Share AirTag temporarily
Do you regularly lose your things? Or do you always want to keep an eye on the location of your luggage? Then the AirTag is now indispensable in your wallet, backpack, suitcase or even in your bicycle. With the tracker you follow the location via Apple’s Find My app, so you always know where the object is. However, things can still go wrong and you may lose the AirTag. Of course, the AirTag is not really lost, because you can still see the location of the device.
In that case, it may be useful to share the location of the AirTag with an organization or person. This way, the airline can find the AirTag or the employee of a particular business can help look for your wallet. Apple has now come up with a handy feature for this, because you can temporarily share the location of the AirTag with others from iOS 18.2. That’s how it works.
Send link from AirTag
Can’t find your AirTag? Or has the tracker been left behind at a location? You can then temporarily share the current location of the AirTag with an organization or person. To do this, you need to go to the Find My app on your iPhone or iPad, the device must be running iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.2 or newer. Sharing the location then proceeds as follows:
- Open the Find My app;
- Go to the ‘Objects’ tab;
- Tap the object you want to share temporarily;
- Scroll down and choose ‘Share item location’;
- Then share the link with a contact.
Have you shared the link with your AirTag location? It then remains active for five days. After that, the link will automatically expire and the location will no longer be visible. Have you found the AirTag before, or do you want to stop sharing the temporary link to the AirTag? You do this by going to the object in the Find My app, tapping ‘Share item location’ and choosing ‘Turn off item location’. The location of the object is then no longer visible via the link.
Want to buy AirTag?
The temporary link to the AirTag also stops sharing the location once you are reunited with the device. So you no longer have to worry about the link, because the sharing of the location is always ended automatically. The feature in iOS 18.2 is a useful addition to the existing features of the AirTag. For example, it is already possible to share an AirTag with contacts indefinitely, read how to do that here.
