Jaguar Land Rover is working on new technology to reduce the number of touch moments on touchscreens. This should improve hygiene and safety.
When the first touchscreens arrived in cars, that was seen as a huge advance. Now Jaguar Land Rover wants to get rid of it again. According to the manufacturer, it is better for hygiene (due to bacteria and the like) if drivers sit at the screen less often. In addition, it can also cause distraction while driving if you have to look at what you are touching on the screen. To counteract this, the group is developing screens that can determine what you want to do from a distance.
Specifically, it means that you point your finger at the screen and already know which ‘button’ you want to press. This way you not only have to touch the screen anymore, but you can also start actions faster. According to JLR, the screen should even be able to predict which actions you want to perform using artificial intelligence. According to the British, it also helps if you are driving on bumpy roads or terrains. Then it can sometimes be difficult to print exactly in the right place, something that should also be a thing of the past. JLR is working with the University of Cambridge on this technology. When we can expect it in production cars is not yet known.
