A new version of the airtag is coming! It has now been four years since the first generation of the airtag appeared. Apple released the tracker in 2021 and has since brought few innovations to the device. That will change in 2025, because Apple is working on airtag 2. It is expected that the airtag 2 will have a much larger reach, but that is not the most important improvement.

According to the generally reliable Apple analyst Mark Gurman, we see the most important improvement in the privacy of the airtag 2. Where the tracker is a useful tool for detecting things if your keys or wallet, the airtag is unfortunately also abused to undesirable people to follow. Apple wants to prevent this in the airtag 2, for which the company is making an important change.

Better protected speakers

Gurman expects the speakers of the airtag 2 to be protected much better. The speakers are an important part to detect the device, especially if a strange airtag moves with you. In that case you will receive a notification on your iPhone, then a sound is played on the airtag. This way you can easily find the tracker between your things, even if it is not your own airtag.

With the first generation of the airtag it is possible to remove these speakers, making them more difficult to find if they are used for stalking. With the airtag 2, Apple is therefore implementing an important improvement that must ensure that the speakers cannot be removed. In that case, the device can always play a sound and to detect its unknown airtags.

Release of the airtag 2

This improvement must ensure that you find the airtag 2 easier, but may also bring a disadvantage to the device. For example, it is more likely that your airtag will play a sound at unwanted moments, as is sometimes the case with the first generation of the tracker. Other changes with the airtag 2 are a new processor and a greater range for ‘accurate search’.

It is not yet known when the airtag 2 will appear exactly. According to Gurman, the device will only come in the second half of 2025. Then we know for sure what improvements Apple brings to the airtag 2 and what will be the starting price.
