Airpods Max 2 is not coming for the time being

Apple has released the AirPods Max in 2020. Since that time, it has been regularly anticipating the appearance of the AirPods Max 2. A year ago it was still expected that it would be presented at the same time as the iPhone 16 series, but that did not happen.

Mark Gurman van Bloomberg suggests in his last Power on-newsletter That the AirPods Max from Apple is in a commercial limbo. The device is too popular to stop selling it and not popular enough to invest a lot of time and money in developing a new version. It is therefore his expectation that no AirPods Max 2 will appear in the short term.

On the long track

Gurman’s message follows one Message from Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo Earlier this year. He indicated that the AirPods could go into mass production in 2027. Gurman claims that the Apple audio team focuses more on annual AirPods updates and supporting audio components in other products. He also does not think that Apple will release the AirPods Pro 3 this fall.

The minimum deployment of Apple for the AirPods Max line became clear last year. A ‘new’ version was then added to which only a USB C port was added to comply with EU regulations. There were also some new colors, but there were no meaningful improvements at all.

The first version of the AirPods Max is now almost five years old and that is a remarkably long time for an Apple product that is still not a new version. And that will not change for the time being.
