The iPhone 17 Air and the iPhone 17 Pro will be on the market in September. We can already make a comparison based on the latest rumors. That way you already know which of these two iPhones suits you best. To be clear: the comparison is based on expectations!

Housing
Not all specifications of both housings are currently known. It looks like the iPhone 17 Air 163 x 77.6 x 5.5 mm is becoming and weighs around 146 g. The iPhone 17 Pro is at least a lot thicker, but given the smaller screen also a bit smaller. For comparison: the iPhone 16 Pro also has a screen of 6.3 inches. The dimensions thereof amount to 149.6 x 71.5 x 8.3 mm.
Screen
Apart from the size, there are hardly any differences between the screens of both iPhones. The screen of the iPhone 17 Air is 6.9 inches and has a resolution of 1320 x 2868 pixels, that of the iPhone 17 Pro is 6.3 inches with a resolution of 1206 x 2622 pixels. For both devices, this means a pixel density of 458 ppi.
Camera
One of the biggest differences between the iPhone 17 Air and the iPhone 17 Pro is of course the camera. The iPhone 17 Air has a 48 megapixel wide -angle camera on the back. The iPhone 17 Pro also has it, but it also has a 48 megapixel tele-, a 48 megapixel ultra-wide angle camera and a Lidar scanner. So that is considerably more extensive than on the iPhone 17 Air.
At the front both the iPhones have a selfie camera. That of the iPhone 17 Air is a 12 megapixel wide -angle camera, that of the iPhone 17 Pro a 24 megapixel wide -angle camera.
Performance
The expectation is that both the iPhone 17 Air and the iPhone 17 Pro will receive an A19 Pro chip. So that no difference in performance. Only the iPhone 17 Pro probably gets 12 GB of memory and the iPhone 17 Air has to do with ‘only’ 8 GB. With home-garden-and-kitchen use you will not notice that much difference, with heavier tasks probably. Both devices support in any case Apple Intelligence.
Battery
At the battery we see a somewhat bigger difference. Since the iPhone 17 Air is so thin, only a thin battery fits in (which is slightly longer than that of the iPhone 17 Pro). We expect a battery with a capacity of around 2800 mAh in the Air and a battery of around 3500 mAh in the Pro. The battery life of the Pro will in any case be longer, but how big the difference in practice will be, remains to be seen.

Conclusion: iPhone 17 Air vs iPhone 17 Pro
The iPhone 17 Pro is clearly a lot better than the iPhone 17 Air. It would therefore not surprise us if the price difference between the two devices turns out to be greater. The Pro has two extra cameras, more memory and a longer battery life. The Air only has a larger screen and is a lot thinner. A larger price difference could justify the choice for the Air. The iPhone 17 Air is excellent for everyday use, but then the price should not be too high.
