WhatsApp users for iPhone and Android can use animated emoji in chat conversations. Just like with Telegram, an animation appears as soon as you send the emoji separately to a conversation partner or when you receive it.
The moving emoticons are fun, but can also be experienced as disturbing. Fortunately, the animations have been limited to a few emoji, because you can no longer turn off the moving effects. We explain how to use the new effects.
Animated Emoji in WhatsApp
WhatsApp has provided some emoji with a moving effect when you send them individually to someone. This gives your reaction extra power and, above all, a playful effect. Not all emoji are animated, below you can view the animated emoticons that you can currently use. The offer may be expanded in the coming period. Mind you, it doesn’t always work, why is also a mystery to me.

Sending moving emoticon
Sending an animated emoji is very simple, select one of the above emoji in the appropriate keyboard and send it. You have to make sure that you only send one emoticon, if you send more, the animation will not be added. The moving emoji are being rolled out in phases, it may be that your device does not have them yet.
Disable emoji animations
You can disable the animations using the steps below:
- Open WhatsApp
- Navigate to ‘Institutions‘
- Tap ‘Chats‘
- Go to ‘Animations‘
- Disable the options you want, including emoji
If you receive a moving emoji after turning it off, the animation will not play. This is also the case for gifs and animated stickers. These animations will also no longer play automatically. Tapping on the gif, sticker or emoji will still start the movement.
