The iPhone 17 has a beautiful new screen, but you shouldn’t put a screen protector on it. But why not?
Sometimes it is better not to put a screen protector on your iPhone 17
If you have just bought a new iPhone 17, it is tempting to immediately put a screen protector on it. You naturally want to protect your valuable screen against scratches or falls. But sometimes it’s better not to do that. A standard screen protector can almost completely negate the iPhone 17’s new anti-reflective coating.
The iPhone 17 is equipped with what Apple calls ‘Ceramic Shield 2’ on the front. The strong glass is more resistant to scratches, and according to Apple, this is up to 3x better than previous displays.
But Ceramic Shield 2 has another advantage. It also ensures that the screen is less reflective in bright light. According to a test of the website Astropad this coating ensures about 50 percent less reflection compared to the previous iPhone generation.
That’s nice, you might think, but what they also discovered is that the anti-reflective property disappears as soon as you put a standard screen protector on your iPhone 17. The reflection with a screen protector is even slightly worse than the standard reflection of the screen on an iPhone 16 Pro.
You don’t have to immediately remove your screen protector from your iPhone 17 if you have one on it. Leave it alone if you regularly put your iPhone and your keys in your pocket. But keep in mind that the screen can mirror a little more without such a protector.
There are of course screen protectors with an anti-reflective layer, such as these from Upscreen. But they are often slightly more expensive. However, it is smart to take this into account if you like to put a screen protector on your iPhone 17.
