Be careful: this prevents your iPhone from sending your exact location with photos

Do you regularly share images or videos via your iPhone? Then be careful, because your iPhone sends your exact location with these photos and videos. This is how you prevent that!

iPhone shares your location

The iPhone’s camera has gotten better and better in recent years. It is therefore not surprising that the iPhone is now also their camera for many people. With the latest iPhones you can take photos and videos of the highest quality. You can then easily share these files via Messages, WhatsApp or AirDrop, for example, but that is not always wise. Your iPhone also sends your exact location with these photos and videos.

When you take a photo or video, your iPhone stores a lot of data. In the data of these files you can see which iPhone you have, with which camera the images were captured and at which location. Do you regularly take photos and videos in your own home, which you then share with others? Then pay close attention, because this way your iPhone will reveal which address you live at. Do you want to prevent that? Then quickly disable the next function.

Hide location on your iPhone

When taking a photo or video, your iPhone automatically records the exact location at that moment. This feature is enabled by default, so all images and videos contain your location. If you regularly share photos and videos via Messages or AirDrop, for example, it is wise to turn off this feature. Here’s how to make sure your iPhone doesn’t give away the exact location of your photos and videos:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone;

  2. Scroll down and tap ‘Privacy & Security’;

  3. Choose ‘Location Services’;

  4. Tap ‘Camera’;

  5. Finally, select ‘Never’.

Have you changed your location services to ‘Never’? In that case, the Camera app will no longer have access to your iPhone’s location. This means that your exact location is no longer saved when taking photos and videos. The location is therefore no longer sent when you send images via Messages or AirDrop. This way you can be sure that your home or workplace is not unintentionally shared with others.

More iPhone tips

With the location services for the iPhone camera turned off, your privacy is better protected. The only downside to this feature is that all photos and videos no longer appear on the map in the Photos app. On the other hand, the exact location of your iPhone remains well protected, even if you share footage with others in Messages or AirDrop. The same applies the other way around, because you can also see the precise location of forwarded photos and videos.

You only need to save the incoming image or video to your iPhone. Then go to your photo library, tap the file and swipe up on the screen to see its exact location. Do you regularly share photos and videos with relatively unknown contacts, such as work associates or someone you just met? Then it is better to disable the function to protect your privacy.
