Apple has its free Sports app for iPhone considerably expanded. The app is available in more than 170 countries and regions worldwide, including more than 90 new markets. As a result, sports fans in Australia, Japan, India, South Korea, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and South Africa, among others, can now also access real-time scores, statistics and match information. The app was already available in the Netherlands and Belgium.
The expansion has been deliberately planned for the 2026 FIFA World Cup™, which starts in June. Apple Sports is introducing personal, real-time features that help users follow every moment of the tournament. The app remains completely free to download from the App Store and is so far exclusively available for the iPhone.
New features for the 2026 World Cup
Apple has added a number of new options to the Sports app especially for the 2026 World Cup. The most notable addition is the tournament view, a clear and scrollable view of matches and results per round. Users can easily follow how a team progresses from the group stage to the final. This view makes it easier to see the entire tournament path at a glance.
In addition, the match maps have been improved with visual formations showing each team’s lineup. This provides more tactical insight prior to each match. Sports fans can immediately see which players are in action and how the team is lined up, without having to open another app.
Add 2026 World Cup to Apple Sports
- Update Apple Sports to version 4.0 or later
- Open Apple Sports
- Tap the more button top right (changes depending on your previous choice)
- Choose ‘Change‘
- Tap the star symbol for FIFA World Cup 2026
- Confirm with it finch
- Tap the more button top right
- Choose FIFA World Cup 2026
You will immediately get an overview of the group stage, later you will also see the upcoming matches, points and more.
Do you want to add your favorite countries to your teams? Then tap at the top more button and choose ‘Change‘. Select it from the list FIFA World Cup 2026 and choose your favorite countries by clicking on it asterisk tapping next to each country.
Live Activities and widgets for real-time tracking
Live Activities are an important part of the new options. Follow live scores on your iPhone’s Lock screen or on your Apple Watch with a quick glance. By following a team, you automatically activate these Live Activities, so you can follow every moment of a match without having to actively open the app. The app is designed for speed and ease of use, with an intuitive interface that focuses on users’ favorite teams and leagues.
Widgets are also available for iPhone and iPad. Add them to your home screen or lock screen to watch the tournament in real time without opening the app. For match watching, you can jump straight to Apple TV with one tap to find live matches in the Apple TV app on connected streaming services.
