KPN changes conditions and makes Extra Safe Mobile (€1 per month) mandatory: this is how you switch for free

Existing customers must pay extra

KPN will change the general terms and conditions on June 1, 2026 and activate an extra service, which means that mobile customers will automatically and compulsorily have to pay € 1 extra per month for the new security service Extra Safe Mobile. It is not possible to disable this service to save €1. However, customers can switch to another provider free of charge.

And you may have more reasons to switch because in addition to this extra layer of security, KPN is also tightening the rules surrounding price increases: for the first time, the new conditions include a clear maximum for additional rate increases. on top the annual inflation correction, namely a maximum of five percent of your monthly amount or three euros per month per calendar year.

Extra Secure Mobile as standard with KPN

Extra Safe Mobile is a security layer on KPN’s mobile network that checks suspicious and unsafe websites and blocks them where necessary. The service is intended to better protect you against malware, phishing and other forms of cybercrime while using mobile internet.

From June 1, 2026, Extra Safe Mobile will be linked to all KPN mobile subscriptions, meaning customers will automatically pay one euro more per month. Funny enough, you have to manually activate the function yourself via a text message, the KPN app or the website, but you also pay the surcharge if you do not activate the service

Extra secure mobile does not work

Despite the extra protection provided via the KPN network, there may be several reasons why Extra Safe Mobile does not work. Check the following:

  • Do you use iCloud+ on your iPhone? Then it may be that Private Relay is enabled. This ensures that your IP address is hidden and your internet traffic is encrypted. As a result, Extra Secure Mobile (EVM) may not work properly.
  • Turn off your WiFi via your phone. Extra Safe Mobile does not work if WiFi is turned on.
  • Check whether mobile data is enabled on the correct phone where EVM is active.

Service mandatory for existing customers

Because Extra Safe Mobile is added to your subscription as standard, you as an existing customer cannot choose to avoid these extra euros without adjusting or canceling your subscription. New mobile customers who sign up from the spring of 2026 will already have the service included in their subscription, so no separate price increase will be announced for them.

Maximum on additional price increases above inflation

In addition, KPN is adjusting the way in which they can implement additional price increases on top of inflation for existing subscriptions. Previously, there were no clear maximum limits for additional increases. With the new conditions the monthly rates may now be increased per year by a maximum of five percent of the monthly price or a maximum of three euros per month, on top of the inflation correction. This applies to both fixed and mobile services and makes it clearer how much your subscription could cost extra in the worst case scenario in addition to inflation.

Cancel KPN for free

Because KPN changes the general terms and conditions and adds a new paid service, customers temporarily receive additional rights. You can cancel or switch your subscription free of charge, even during the contract period. Make sure you make this choice for June 1, 2026, when the new conditions come into effect. After that, you can no longer cancel because of this change, unless KPN makes another adjustment that gives you the right to cancel.
