But how does it really perform in daily use, and what disadvantages do you need to know in advance? We have tested the camera extensively. In this review you can read exactly what you can expect from the SwitchBot 3K Pan/Tilt Cam Plus.
SwitchBot 3K Pan/Tilt Cam Plus
The SwitchBot 3K Pan/Tilt Cam Plus is a 5-megapixel indoor camera that can rotate 360° and tilt vertically up to 115°. The camera supports AI detection for person recognition, has motion detection with automatic tracking, offers two-way audio and has a microSD slot for inserting an SD card.
In the box you will find everything you need to start using the camera immediately, as you can always expect from SwitchBot. You will receive, among other things, a USB cable, a USB power adapter, a ceiling mounting plate, mounting screws, a quick start guide and a reset pin to reset the camera.
The camera has a modern and neutral look, making it barely noticeable in most interiors unless you place it in plain view. The white plastic materials used, build quality and dimensions are comparable to competitive cameras in the same price range. Don’t expect a premium camera, but a solid and reliable product.
Installing the camera
Physical installation
With the SwitchBot 3K Pan/Tilt Cam Plus you can place the camera freely or attach it to the ceiling, using the included mounting bracket. For the best results, place the camera as centrally as possible in the room, so that you can make optimal use of the 360° rotation. When possible, ceiling mounting is often the best choice, as there are usually fewer obstacles that can block the camera’s view.
For ceiling mounting, a mounting plate with the corresponding mounting screws is included. Keep in mind that drilling holes in a ceiling can be quite difficult, especially if it is made of reinforced concrete.
The camera requires constant power via the included USB adapter, which you plug into a wall socket. If necessary, you can use a longer USB cable than the standard cable supplied with the product.
Add to the SwitchBot app
Adding the camera to the SwitchBot app is very easy. Open the device overview and tap the plus button to add a new device. For cameras, choose the 3K Pan/Tilt Cam Plus. Then enter the name of your WiFi network and enter the WiFi password. A QR code will then appear on the screen of your iPhone, which you must hold about 20 centimeters in front of the camera lens. Once the camera has scanned the QR code, you will hear a confirmation sound through the speaker and the camera will be connected to your WiFi network. The camera will then automatically appear in the device overview in the SwitchBot app.
Camera functions
Live view, recordings and image quality
The camera is equipped with a 5-megapixel sensor and delivers a 3K image resolution (Super HD). This is more than sufficient for indoor use: the sensor provides a sharp, clear image with plenty of contrast. The sensitive sensor and f/1.6 lens allow more light to be captured, allowing for accurate color reproduction, even in dark rooms with little to no lighting.
Like most cameras, you can record continuously, but you can also choose to only capture images when motion is detected. Recordings are stored on a microSD card (not included) or in the SwitchBot cloud, which requires an optional subscription. Place the memory card under the lens; for this you must place the camera in the highest vertical tilt.
For the camera, a class 10/U1 microSD card is usually the best choice. If you choose continuous recording, we recommend using an SD card from a well-known and reliable brand. The SwitchBot camera supports microSD storage up to 128 GB. Please note: once the card is full, the oldest recordings will be automatically deleted.
After adding the camera in the SwitchBot app, an advertising banner for the SwitchBot cloud storage subscription will appear. If you find this annoying, you can turn it off via the camera settings (gear at the top right) â–¸ More functions â–¸ Turn off personalized recommendations.
The built-in microphone captures sound clearly and voices remain clearly audible on recordings. The built-in speaker, on the other hand, is less powerful, something you see with almost all security cameras in this price range. The speaker can function as an audible alarm, which can be useful to scare away unwanted visitors.
Unfortunately, the camera does not support RTSP. With that protocol you can usually easily integrate the camera into all kinds of apps and systems for home automation. Because the RTSP protocol is missing, you can only view the images via the SwitchBot app and a simple connection with, for example, Home Assistant or Homey is not possible.
AI detection, motion detection and patrol mode
The 360° horizontal pan (turn) and 115° vertical tilt (tilt) make the SwitchBot camera flexible and also suitable for larger spaces. The rotating mechanism moves smoothly and almost silently. In this price range it is quite normal that a slight fluctuation or stutter is visible when moving the camera. Such glitches also occur with this camera, but they are certainly not disturbing.
Thanks to built-in local AI, the camera recognizes people without the need for cloud processing. The people detection works quickly and worked flawlessly during our tests.
The camera can automatically rotate as soon as movement is detected, for example when someone walks past the camera. The rotation is physically limited to 360°, as soon as this limit is reached, the automatic tracking stops. When placing, make sure you choose the right angle for the best reach.
SwitchBot has added a special cruise control for monitoring larger spaces. You can set moments or specific times when the camera will automatically look around to make sure everything is okay. The camera rotates 360 degrees horizontally and also makes vertical movements to see whether something is happening above or below. If the camera sees an unwanted person, it automatically follows him and continues to follow him.
Collaboration with SwitchBot sensors
With a SwitchBot hub you can also use preset point settings. For example, if a door or window sensor goes off, the camera immediately turns to that sensor and immediately starts recording. This is a very useful function if you use one or more SwitchBot sensors in your home.
For times when you want more privacy, the camera has a special privacy mode. When you turn it on, the lens turns towards the housing. Instead of the lens, you will see a bar with the SwitchBot logo. From that moment on, no more video or sound recordings will be made.

With an existing SwitchBot hub you can also get even more out of the camera. You can pair it with other SwitchBot devices, for example so that privacy mode is automatically activated upon entry, or the camera turns towards a door as soon as a sensor registers movement.
If you’re already using the SwitchBot ecosystem, this camera is certainly a useful addition. It is a pity that RTSP is not supported by the camera, so you can only view the images via the SwitchBot app.
