Since software update 26, the AirPods have a useful function: ‘Keep audio in headphones’. This will continue audio playback through your AirPods or wireless headphones even when another Bluetooth device, such as a speaker or car, connects.
This setting prevents unwanted interruptions and ensures a consistent listening experience. This way you can enjoy your favorite music, podcasts or audiobooks without the connection being disrupted. This is especially useful for users who frequently switch devices and want a seamless audio experience no matter the conditions.
Keep audio in headphones
The option prioritizes your headphones as the audio source, so connecting to a speaker or CarPlay system doesn’t automatically take over the output. Ideal for situations such as starting the car while listening to a podcast, or turning on a Bluetooth speaker during a phone call. The feature works with all Bluetooth headphones, not just AirPods.

Terms and compatibility
The feature requires iOS 26, iPadOS 26 or later and works on all iPhones and iPads running this version. Make sure Bluetooth is turned on and devices are signed in with the same Apple account for optimal performance. Always update your AirPods firmware to the latest version for the best performance.
Keep setting audio in headphones
This feature is disabled by default and must be manually enabled on each device where you want the audio to remain in the headphones. So do you want the audio you play via your iPhone to always be heard in your headphones? Then you need to enable this via the steps below:
- Open the Institutionsapp on your iPhone or iPad
- Go to ‘General‘
- Tap ‘AirPlay and Continuity‘
- Switch ‘Keep audio in headphones‘ in

You can only set the audio in headphones on an iPhone or iPad, you cannot set this on a Mac, Apple Watch or Apple TV.
