With the iPhone Duo, Apple has not simply created an iPhone with a foldable screen that shows an iPad mini interface on the inside. For this new model, Apple has visibly redesigned iOS so that the software doesn’t feel like a stretched version of iOS for a larger display, but like a system built specifically for this form factor.
You will notice this the moment you open the iPhone Duo. The interface responds immediately to the new position of the device and adapts smoothly, making the transition between closed and open feel natural. It is precisely this attention to detail that ensures that the iPhone Duo comes across more as an independent product than as a cross between an iPhone and an iPad.
iOS redesigned for foldable use
Apple has moved several familiar parts of iOS to make better use of the foldable screen. Controls on the Lock screen, the Dock on the Home screen, and also app navigation are no longer at the bottom by default, but appear on the side of the screen.
According to Apple, this was done to leave more vertical space free for content, which provides immediate benefits on a foldable device. When the Duo is opened, you will see an iPad-like interface with more space for content, sidebars and large widgets. Users who have already owned the iPhone Duo say that iOS feels more like iOS+ than iPadOS on an iPhone.
The home screen is also structured differently than on a regular iPhone. Once the iPhone Duo is open, the inner screen shows two Home Screen pages at once, while the Today view is visible on the left as a vertical widget column. This creates a more spacious and informative layout that is reminiscent of a tablet, without iOS changing into iPadOS.
Attention to animation
Apple has not just moved individual parts, but has tailored the entire interface to the way the iPhone Duo physically moves. iOS adapts in real time as the device opens, closes or changes position. Content therefore remains logically displayed and controls remain in a place where they are easily accessible.
Status bar changed
The iPhone and iPad have used a status bar at the top of the screen for years, but on the iPhone Duo the status information has been adapted to the new design. The status display is in a compact, flexible form in the corner of the screen and shows information such as WiFi, mobile data and battery status. In addition, the Dynamic Island has also been redesigned so that it can appear vertically along the edge of the display and better fits the elongated side layout of the interface.
Multitasking finally comes to the iPhone
One of the most important software innovations of the iPhone Duo is Split View. This allows you to open two apps side by side on the 7.6-inch inner screen for the first time on an iPhone. That not only makes the iPhone Duo more suitable for productivity, but also changes how you use apps on an iPhone.
Moreover, Apple has not half-developed that function. Users can use two different apps side by side, but also open two windows of the same app, such as two Safari pages to compare information or products. App combinations can also be saved, so you can quickly reopen favorite work setups later.
According to Apple, Split View is built on the well-known iPhone gestures, so that it continues to feel familiar. In the developer tutorial, Apple shows that you can simply drag an app to the side to create a 50/50 view, with both halves working independently of each other. The controls remain along the outer edge, so that they are easily accessible with your thumb and do not end up in the middle around the fold
Apps use the entire inner screen
Apple wants apps on the iPhone Duo not to simply be stretched, but to really fit into the larger inner screen. Developers can customize their apps to utilize the full space of the 7.6-inch screen, including bezels, background elements and wider layouts that are much better suited to this form factor.
You can use the Duo in multiple modes, and apps can benefit from this. This way you can use the iPhone as a stand, with the top part of the screen being used as a video player and the bottom part for the media buttons. This way you can also display the keyboard as a mini MacBook.
Smart keyboard
On the iPhone Duo, the keyboard is split between the two halves of the inner screen in landscape orientation, so you can type with your thumbs much more naturally and comfortably. This leaves the center of the screen free and typing on the foldable display feels faster and better.
When developers don’t update their apps
Not every app will be fully adapted for the iPhone Duo from day one. Apple allows older apps to run normally, but they have a conservative compatibility view on the inner screen. Apps built for iOS 26 or older will remain in a rectangular window, with black bars or empty space on the sides, so the interface doesn’t stretch unnaturally.
This means that such apps work technically, but are clearly lacking visually. They do not fully utilize the large inner screen, look smaller and feel less modern next to apps that have been updated for iOS 27.1. Apple makes it clear that the iPhone Duo does fall back on compatibility, but that the best experience only arises when developers really optimize their app for the new screen and the new interface rules.
Not an iPhone or iPad, but something new
It is precisely this combination of interface adjustments, smart placement of controls and new multitasking functions that gives the iPhone Duo its own character. The device uses familiar parts of iOS, but Apple has adapted them in such a way that the experience does not feel like a compromise or a hybrid of existing products.
The iPhone Duo clearly shows where Apple excels. Hardware and software are coordinated from the start. As a result, the iPhone Duo does not feel like an experiment with a foldable screen, but as a fully-fledged new Apple product that convinces through the collaboration between design and software. Whether the Duo will be a success remains to be seen, the high recommended retail price and the usefulness of the foldable screen have not yet convinced Apple enthusiasts.
