A Facebook user writes a comment on the Corona demo in Berlin at the beginning of August. The Facebook post is thought-provoking – it went viral again in the context of the demo last weekend.

“In Berlin, people did not demonstrate against Corona regulations. In Berlin, people demonstrated for their right to be overwhelmed by the complexity of the world. ”With these words, Joey Hoffmanns begins post Office on his Facebook page vapers.guru. Hoffmann published the post on August 2nd, one day after the first big Corona demo in Berlin. A few days ago, his statements went viral again.

In his post, Hoffmann describes the movement against the Corona measures as “collective[s] cognitive[s] Total failure “. The movement will fail because it does not propose any alternatives and solutions and thus disregards the social rules of a democracy.

“Most of them did not even understand the Basic Law”

In addition, the movement will fail because of its Dunning-Kruger effect, said Hoffmann. This effect says that half-knowing people overestimate themselves because they do not recognize their own incompetence. In return, they underestimate the skills of more competent people.

“Suddenly everyone is an epidemiologist, virologist, climate researcher, migration analyst, religious scholar and lawyer. Most of them didn’t even understand the Basic Law, ”writes Hoffmann. What he means by that becomes clear in another part of his post: “You are demonstrating for freedom and you don’t even notice that you are already exercising one of the greatest freedoms. They comment on social media about the loss of freedom of expression and don’t even notice the contradiction. “

Despite believing the movement is failing, Hoffmann is clearly concerned. There is a risk that the people who loudly demonstrate against the alleged “dictatorship of opinion” will conjure up an actual dictatorship. The “loss of democratic coexistence” is one aspect that Hoffmann criticizes about the movement.

Instead of adhering to the democratic consensus of wearing a mask, the demonstrators would complain about a lack of freedom. Many would wave the flag of a dictatorial regime in which they would have had far less freedom. “They actually believe the democratic majority are the dictators, because out of sheer freedom they have forgotten what bondage actually means.”

The post goes viral

Hoffmann’s comment went viral, it was shared on Facebook over four thousand times (as of September 1). In addition, an unknown person copied the comment under an article from Zeit Online. The cabaret artist discovered him there Christoph Sieber and – almost a month later – the Twitter user Karla Knows. They shared it on Facebook and Twitter and achieved a further 27,000 shares or almost 7,000 retweets.
