This is the new Volkswagen Golf Variant

Volkswagen is finally expanding the Golf family with the new Golf Variant, the long-awaited station version that has grown in every respect compared to its predecessor.

The Volkswagen Golf is already available with various powertrains. In addition to regular variants, the brand already supplies sportier flavors such as the GTI and GTD. Whatever engine version or version you choose, until now you were always dependent on the regular five-door hatchback version of the Golf 8. That will change. Just under a year after the unveiling of the hatchback version, Volkswagen has pulled the curtain off the brand new Golf Variant.

Dimensions

The new Golf Variant is 4.63 meters long, which makes it 35 centimeters longer than the hatchback version of the Golf. This makes the new Golf Variant, just like the previous Golf Variant, a lot bigger than its hatchback brother, although the difference has increased. After all, the station version of the previous Golf was about 31 centimeters longer than the hatchback version. Another striking fact: the wheelbase of the new Golf Variant is 2.67 meters. This means that the distance between the front and rear axle is 6.7 centimeters longer than on the five-door hatchback. Never before has the wheelbase differed so much between the station version and that of the hatchback taste. The dimensions of the new Golf Variant are almost identical to those of its technical brother Seat Leon Sportstourer. Purely in terms of length, the most practical variant of the Golf has to recognize its multiple in the Skoda Octavia Combi. That car has almost the same wheelbase, but with a length of 4.69 meters it is about 6 centimeters longer. The longer wheelbase compared to the hatchback has about 4 centimeters extra legroom for the rear passengers as a favorable side effect.

Luggage compartment

Perhaps the most important question when introducing the new Golf: how big is the luggage space? Well now. The new Golf Variant has a luggage capacity of 611 liters, 6 liters more compared to the previous Golf Variant. That is slightly less than the 620 liters that consumes its Spanish equivalent. Again the Octavia Combi wins here with flying colors. The Czech station eats 640 liters without a murmur. If you throw the back seat in the Golf Variant flat, you can bring 1,642 liters of stuff. In that respect, the German nestles between its Spanish (1,600 liters) and Czech (1,700 liters) sister models.

Just like the previous generation Golf Variant, there is also an Alltrack version of the latest incarnation of the model. This adventurously decked version has 4Motion all-wheel drive as standard, has greater ground clearance and is dressed on the outside with things like plastic wheel arch edges, silver-colored skid plates and modified bumper work with striking five-hole lighting on either side of the front bumper. At the time of writing, it is not yet known whether this Alltrack variant will also come to the Netherlands. Volkswagen did deliver an Alltrack version of the previous generation Golf Variant between 2017 and 2018.

availabilty

The new Golf Variant will be on the market in the fourth quarter of this year. Prices and information regarding the Dutch market will follow very soon. In any case, you can count on an extensive engine mix that includes mild hybrid eTSI petrol engines, plug-in hybrids and diesels. In the long term, a very hard R version with a likely 310 hp and 400 Nm strong 2.0 TSI will also strengthen the ranks as a power plant.

At the time of writing, no definitive press release was available. Mentioned dimensions are therefore somewhat subject to change. Official footage will also be available later.
