Genesis has registered some interesting new model names in its homeland South Korea. These seem to indicate (partly) electric versions of existing models, but there is also a top SUV in the barrel.
The new type names entered by someone on GV Forums have surfaced are G70e, G80e, G90e, GV70e, GV80e and GV90e. For the most part, these are well-known model names, with an ‘e’ after them. Nowadays, that letter is of course everywhere a symbol for an at least partly electric powertrain. It therefore strongly seems that Genesis is preparing or plug-in hybrid versions of the cars, but fully electric cannot be ruled out either. In the latter case, it may be a next generation of the models.
From Genesis, which is also coming our way, we currently know the G70, GV70 (main photo), G80, GV80 and G90. The G70, G80 and G90 are the oldest of the bunch (about 4, 5 and 6 years old respectively), the GV70 and GV80 were unveiled in 2020. If there were already a fully electric powertrain in the pipeline for these models, it would probably have been known earlier. The most logical step therefore seems to be that for these generations there will be hybrid variants that will then bear an ‘e’ after the type name. Another possibility is that these are fully electrically powered versions, but for that we logically have to wait for the next generations. In that case, the aging G70, G80 and G90 would be the first to act.
GV90e
If it’s not those three sedans that kick it off, it’s the GV90e. The fact that the type name ‘GV90e’ has been registered means that there will be another new model next to the G90. An SUV in the top segment, such as the Mercedes-Benz GLS. Since that car is still completely unknown, there is a chance that it will only be revealed as GV90e and therefore purely with a (partly) electric drive. Model name ‘GV90’ is not registered as far as is known.
‘JW’
Lower down in the market, Hyundai’s luxury brand is working on a fully electric model anyway. It is still referred to as ‘JW’, but that name will probably change. That’s a car on the Hyundai Motor Group’s modular E-GMP platform. So it may eventually be joined by more plugged-in versions in the Genesis family. We wait it out quietly.
