Many of us are said to already suffer from what is known as “metabolic syndrome” – without even knowing about it. Doctors warn of the disease of affluence: if left untreated, it can lead to diabetes, strokes and heart attacks.
Metabolic syndrome is more than just a precursor to diabetes the warned Federal Association of German Pharmacists’ Associations (ABDA) as early as 2019. Suffering in the industrialized nations almost every third under the relatively new disease of prosperity. But what exactly is behind the disease?
Metabolic syndrome: cause and consequences
The metabolic syndrome is a consequence of our modern lifestyle: It affects anyone who suffers from a combination of obesity, high blood pressure, and increased fat and blood sugar levels, writes the ABDA. These people are significantly more susceptible to diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
But the effects can be far worse: The combination of common complaints can lead to heart attacks, strokes or vascular occlusions at an early stage. If left untreated, the syndrome is a time bomb, explained. Dr. Eric Martin at pharmacon, an international training congress of the Federal Chamber of Pharmacists. He is a pharmacist and teaches pharmacy at the University of Würzburg.
A 2020 study from the USA also found that metabolic syndrome is associated with a 4-fold increased risk of serious or fatal COVID-19 illness.
Insulin resistance: overweight people are particularly at risk
“Obesity is not just a cosmetic problem,” said Dr. Martin. Fat pads around the abdomen and waist soon form inflammatory messengers and can trigger insulin resistance. This means that the hormone can no longer work properly on muscle, liver cells and other organs. The body tries to correct this by making more insulin.
“In the long term, this oversupply of insulin only postpones the development of diabetes, but at the same time promotes high blood pressure, lipid metabolism disorders and arteriosclerosis,” explains Dr. Martin. Damage caused by diabetes would only occur later, including to the kidneys, eyes or nerves. The earlier you act, the more damage to health can be avoided.
Metabolic Syndrome: How To Protect Yourself
The good news: You can protect yourself from the disease relatively easily. Because obesity, high blood pressure, high blood sugar and increased blood lipid levels are only the consequences of an unhealthy lifestyle. All you need to do to prevent the disease is exercise more and eat healthier food.
It is important that you permanently integrate the changes into your everyday life. For example, try morning exercise or some gentle yoga exercises in the evening. If you pre-cook in the evening or on the weekend and avoid ready-made products and other sugar traps, you will eat a much healthier diet. In this way, you usually also automatically reduce your weight.
Pill against the complaints? So that’s not a good idea
According to Dr. Martin is said to be too annoying for many patients. Because many do not understand the connections between their complaints and their habits. Therefore, they would often resort to drugs that alleviate individual symptoms. According to the pharmacist, however, this is not a solution in the long term. “Doctors and pharmacists still have a lot of educational work to do here.”
