A new feature for Windows PCs should make it easier to exchange files between a Windows PC and an iPhone. You can see this new function as a kind of AirDrop, but for non-Apple products.

Microsoft introduces AirDrop function for Windows and iPhone

In one blog post Microsoft has announced that a new beta version of the ‘Microsoft Phone Link for iPhone’ app will be available for Windows Insiders. This app allows you to connect an iPhone to a Windows PC. But now there is an AirDrop function.

When you use the beta app and want to share a file, Windows will show your iPhone as one of the options where you can send a file. If you want to send a file to your Windows PC in iOS, you need to choose the ‘Link to Windows’ app when sharing.

To use the feature, you need an iPhone with iOS 16 or newer, according to Microsoft. That means you must have an iPhone 8 or newer. Additionally, you will need to download the beta version of the Microsoft Phone Link for iPhone app on your Windows PC. In addition, you must have the ‘Link to Windows’ app on your iPhone.

To download the beta app for Windows, you must register as a Windows Insider. This allows you to download various beta versions of Windows and Windows apps. If you’d rather not use beta versions, you’ll have to wait a little longer until the AirDrop feature eventually comes to every version of Windows 10 and Windows 11. It is not yet known when exactly that will happen.

The fact that this feature is coming is very good news for Windows users. It’s quite cumbersome to share files between iPhones and non-Apple devices at the moment.
