To make the casing thinner, Apple is working on its own 5G modem, which should replace the current variant. Designers at Apple are said to have complained about Qualcomm’s modem, which can be found in the iPhone 16. The employees think that the hardware takes up too much space.

To solve this problem, Apple has designed its own modem under the code name Sinope. The new part is much smaller and more energy efficient. It’s expected that we’ll see Apple’s own smaller modem with the iPhone 17 Air, leaving more space in the case. Apple uses that space to reposition parts to make the device much thinner.
Developing a new modem took Apple years. The company has invested billions in the part, to completely replace Qualcomm’s hardware in the iPhone. That is also the reason why the iPhone 17 Air is so expensive to produce, because Apple had to develop a completely new modem for it. We may also see these high costs reflected in the price, making the iPhone 17 Air more expensive than the iPhone 16 Plus.

There is still a lot of uncertainty about the final price of the iPhone 17 Air, which may not yet be known to Apple itself. In any case, there is a good chance that the starting price will be higher than we currently see for the iPhone 16 and the iPhone 16 Plus. You can get the iPhone 16 Plus from Apple from 1119 euros. If the rumors are true, the iPhone 17 Air will be more expensive than this starting price. It was previously predicted that the iPhone 17 Air will be the most expensive iPhone ever.
However, it seems unlikely that the iPhone 17 Air will be more expensive than the iPhone 17 Pro Max. The Air model has less advanced specifications, the device only has one 48-megapixel camera and the A19 chip. Apple will not charge more money for an iPhone with fewer features, which will at least make the phone cheaper than the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
