Twitter automatically filters your DMs: this is how you turn this option off

Twitter will now automatically filter strangers’ private messages. Afraid you will miss messages? This is how you disable the option.

This will stop Twitter filtering private messages

Twitter’s Direct Messages are a special place. If you’ve turned on the ability to receive private messages from all users, literally anyone can slide into your DMs with messages and photos. That can cause a lot of spam, but also nasty messages that you just don’t want to see.

In an effort to combat annoying messages, Twitter is introducing a ‘quality filter’. This means that the messages from people you do not follow will be filtered, and in theory you will only see quality messages.

The quality filter is used, among other things, to prevent duplicate messages and automated messages. Messages with swear words are also likely to be filtered out. However, if you are afraid that you will miss important messages in this way, this filter can also be switched off. To do this, you go through the following steps:

  1. Open the official Twitter app;
  2. Go to your DMs by tapping the envelope at the bottom right;
  3. Tap the ‘Requests’ tab;
  4. Tap ‘Change settings’ at the top;
  5. Move the slider at ‘Quality filter’.

In this settings menu you can also indicate that you only want to receive private messages from people you follow. This will block all DMs from strangers. It can also be switched off that Twitter sends a read confirmation in the form of check marks next to a message. If you disable this option, you will no longer see read receipts from others.

Why third-party Twitter apps can now do less

Earlier this month, Twitter made some changes, suddenly causing several third-party apps to have fewer features. This way you no longer receive push notifications and your timeline no longer refreshes automatically. Why that happens? Learn why Twitter apps are being sidelined by Twitter.
