Premier division of the new Golf 8 generation
Volkswagen Golf GTE 2020
Not one new family member of the Volkswagen Golf makes his debut at the Geneva Motor Show, not two, but three: the sporty GTI and GTD plus the plug-in hybrid GTE.
We mentioned earlier that Volkswagen is presenting the Golf GTI at the annual Geneva motor show. Now the brand has announced that the sporty diesel brother GTD is also making its debut on the Swiss stock market, just like the plug-in hybrid GTD. The three come to the Dutch showrooms in the second half of this year, then the prizes will follow.
Golf GTE plug-in hybrid
The plug hybrid GTE is not inferior to its sporty brothers, with a system power of 245 hp and a maximum torque of 400 Nm. This comes from a 150-horsepower 1.4-liter TSI petrol engine and an electric motor of 85 kW (114 hp). These are linked to a 6-speed DSG, the dual-clutch automatic transmission. With this top version of the Golf GTE – we also expect a plug-in hybrid with 204 hp system power – you can drive up to 60 km electrically. The top speed is then at 130 km / h.

Golf GTD
The most powerful diesel version of the Volkswagen Golf is traditionally the GTD. The maximum torque of 400 Nm is already available at low speeds, the maximum power is 200 hp. The engine is coupled as standard to the fast-switching 7-speed DSG. By using two new ‘twin-dose’ SCR catalysts, the 2.0 TDI engine would be economical and ‘very clean’.
Golf GTI
From the previously announced gasoline hot hatch GTI, we now also have information about the motorization. The 2.0 TSI engine with 245 hp power and 370 Nm of torque is supplied as standard with a manual six-speed gearbox. If you prefer a vending machine, then you can optionally order the 7-stage ‘shift-by-wire’ DSG.

The three can be separated by the color of the design details in ex and interior: they are blue in and on the GTE, silver in the GTD and red in the GTI. All have a large, open honeycomb grille, X-shaped fog lamps and LED daytime running lights over the entire width. On the side we see wide side skirts, under the trunk a rear skirt and diffuser and finally a spoiler on the roof. Where the GTI has left and right exhaust pipes, the two are on the left on the GTD – with the hybrid they are not even visible.
The three strong Golf brothers have the digital Innovision Cockpit as standard. Thanks to the large screens, there are hardly any physical buttons on the dashboard. Yet there are more setting options than ever. And that means: more driving dynamics. Let those three come.
