Make your Mac boot faster: this is how you disable startup programs

Is your Mac not starting up fast enough, or do you constantly get a message on the screen from an app that you are not using? In this tip, we explain how to disable a so-called ‘startup program’ on the Mac.

Remove Mac launcher: this is how it works

When you press the power button on your iMac or MacBook, all kinds of programs are immediately started in the background. Some of those are from Apple, but many third-party apps you install want to start right away as well. That is useful in some cases, but there are also plenty of apps that you don’t need every time you start using your Mac. Then it is advisable not to start the software automatically every time.

Make your Mac boot faster: this is how you disable startup programs

It’s a good idea to occasionally check which programs start automatically when you turn on your Mac. For example, some apps activate this automatically, which does not benefit the startup speed of your Mac. Fortunately, you can easily turn startup programs on and off manually. That is, if you know where to look. In the step-by-step plan below, we explain step by step how it works.

This is how you disable startup programs

  1. Click on the Apple logo at the top left of the screen and choose System Preferences;

  2. Go to ‘Users and Groups’;

  3. Choose your account and go to ‘Log in’;

  4. In the list that appears, click on the programs that you do not want to start automatically;

  5. Click on the minus to ‘disable’ the app.

It depends on the program what the influence is on your start-up speed. For example, a simple app will make little difference, while heavy programs will make your iMac or MacBook start more slowly.
