Free abstract arcade game Data Wing knows how to surprise

In Data Wing you control a triangular plane that guides you through a path of lines. That’s surprisingly fun and completely free.

Flying through line tracks

Data Wing was created by Dan Vogt, one of the founders of Halfbrick. That’s the studio that previously delivered games like Fruit Ninja and Jetpack Joyride. This is Vogt’s first solo project and it has turned out to be a very successful game.

What is the purpose in Data Wing? You control a triangular vehicle that sends you through dozens of levels. These consist of strips made of lines. By pressing the left side of the screen, you steer to the left. With the right you go to the right and press on both sides, then you brake.

Sounds easy, but it isn’t necessarily. The triangle itself comes up to speed and does not rotate immediately when you tap the screen. It’s about the same kind of momentum as you might know from the classic Asteroids. It takes some getting used to, but then you should slide through the levels.

Drift and slide

Vogt has devised cool mechanisms for this. By flying along the edges of the track, you drift through curves, as it were, and you go a lot faster. This takes practice and it challenges you to always find the perfect line to get over a course as quickly as possible. Sometimes the task is to finish within a certain time, but there are also other missions, such as resisting more gravity that keeps your ship sinking.

The game looks simple thanks to its abstract style, but with some effects it manages to give the impression that it takes place in a computer. The story contributes to that, because the game has that too. It’s just mysterious and interesting enough to keep your attention.

Download Data Wing

Data Wing is a really fun game that you can play completely for free. The app has no in-app purchases, advertisements or any other revenue model. That surprises us as much as the game itself.
