Often times, iPhone games don’t have to be complex to keep you glued to your screen for hours. Holedown is the most recent example of this, and is rightfully one of the most fun and addictive games we’ve played in a long time.
Holedown is worth playing
Every day and week, the App Store is filled with new iOS games, of which we list our favorites every month in the games overview. However, every now and then there is a special case that we would like to introduce to you separately.
Holedown is such a gem that deserves a full review. In this game it is up to you to dig to the bottom of a planet by shooting blocks with balls. Hitting the numbered tetris blocks will make them fall off the screen. You should, because once a block reaches the top of the screen, it is game over.
The balls (with happy faces on them) that you use to shoot these blocks bounce in all directions, which gives Holedown its depth. By hitting a certain block in the right way, you can cause a chain reaction that suddenly causes all blocks to tumble down.
To make things even more complex, there are blocks that keep other blocks in the air. If you manage to shoot this foundation, everything that kept this block upright will also fall away.
Upgrade and new planets
Although Holedown is already fun to chase a higher score every time, you also unlock upgrades along the way. This allows you to fire several balls at the same time, or increase the total number so that you can get even further than before. For variety, there are several planets to play in, each with their own challenge.
What also makes Holedown so striking is the great graphic style. The small white figure that looks at the bottom of the screen and gives tips is a nice comical addition, while the rest of the screen is mainly minimalist. That makes it an excellent game to play for fifteen minutes on the train, or if you are half watching the TV.
Soon you will notice that the TV and the train ride disappear into the background and you can lose dozens of minutes shooting colored blocks. The one-off price of 4.49 euros is therefore well worth Holedown in our opinion.
