Bugatti once again presents a new take on the ‘Chiron’ theme. We already knew the Chiron Super Sport 300+, but now the extra long and extra fast Framsman is also available without that numerical addition. This is the Super Sport!
Many dentists could learn a thing or two from Bugatti’s urge to fill cavities. Anyone who thinks that there is little to vary in the hypercar field should really talk to this hypercar manufacturer based in France with Italian genes and a German parent company. Apart from all kinds of bizarre one-offs, we now know the Chiron as Sport, Pur Sport and Super Sport 300+. A variant has now been added: the Super Sport.
The car is best described as the luxury brother of the Super Sport 300+. That means it’s a Chiron mainly focused on going as fast as possible in a straight line, because the ‘300+’ was the car that shattered the record for production models in that area. Technically, the two are the same, which means that the Super Sport also has no less than 1,600 hp and 1,600 Nm. The top speed seems to be considerably lower, but with 440 km/h you stay well ahead of most fellow road users … Fun fact: full throttle switches the car from sixth to seventh gear at 403 km/h. The sprint from 0 to 200 is over in 5.8 seconds, 300 is on the clock in 12.1 seconds. A sprint from 0 to 400 is not described in seconds, but Bugatti does report that the Super Sport can do that trick seven percent faster than a regular Chiron.
25 cm extra
The regular Super Sport has the same body as the Super Sport 300+ built in a very limited edition. We see a ‘longtail’ butt again, which gives a better streamline due to its shape and no less than 25 centimeters extra length. The layout under the slightly upward-ending stern is also different from a ‘normal’ Chiron, with two sets of exhaust tailpipes placed one above the other. The rear wing can remain as low as possible at top speed due to the differently shaped butt, while still having enough downforce to keep the car on the road.
The front is also different. The air intakes under the headlights are larger and differently drawn. The car also has ‘gills’ behind the front wheels and characteristic porthole-like openings above the front wheels. Those round holes were already on the EB110 Super Sport, albeit in a different place.
Luxury
It takes longer to find differences between this version and the 300+ variant. It seems to be mostly about the wheels, the color scheme and the trim, which is much more luxurious than the even more performance-oriented record car. According to Bugatti, the interior is an oasis of beautiful leather, polished aluminum and carbon, which would make this the ideal means of transport for long and especially fast road trips.
With that approach, the Super Sport is in fact a counterpart to the Pur Sport, which is more focused on fast cornering. The Super Sport also seems to be the ideal competitor for the McLaren Speedtail, even though such a lightning-fast über-GT. The Bugatti Chiron Super Sport costs 3.2 million euros without taxes and the first delivery is scheduled for early 2022.
