Twitter has selected a small group of users to test a new 280-character limit. While waiting for its official deployment, experience the 280 signs now thanks to a simple script.
Update September 28: Twitter.com now prevents the script from running for users who do not participate in the test. When sending a tweet longer than 140 characters, it is now indicated: “Your tweet is over 140 characters long. We’ll have to be smarter. “
Meanwhile, the developer Quinn Commander has developed a Chrome extension activating the 280 characters on Tweetdeck. Twitter could block this feature in the next few hours, however. The extension, which also initially worked with Twitter.com, was blocked by the social network.
Twitter has announced that the 140 character limit is in its final days. The company announced the testing of a new limit of 280 characters, initially reserved for a small group of users. On the social network, some are indignant at this news while others are impatient to finally be able to cross the limit. Prof9, a Twitter user, has developed a simple script to enable this character jailbreak a little earlier than expected. Once activated in the web version, the user can insert up to 280 characters and tweet without receiving an error message. Here is how to do it.
Here’s a quick TamperMonkey script that force enables 280 character tweets in the Twitter web client.https://t.co/uUhW0CKekS

- Install Tampermonkey: Available on Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge or even Opera Next, Tampermonkey is an extension for writing and installing scripts to improve your browsing experience. Presented as an icon in the navigation bar, Tampermonkey enables or disables the passage to 240 characters.

- Add the Prof9 script: Once Tampermonkey is installed, go to the developer’s Github and select the Raw button. Tampermonkey is then requested and offers to install the script. If the Raw option is not offered, you can copy and paste the content of the script and add it manually from the Tampermonkey tab.
- Say goodbye to 140 characters: Now head to Twitter.com where you can insert 280 characters without any problem. Note, however, that the character counter continues to display the limit of 140, but this limit may be exceeded. In the event of an error, you must reload the page and ensure that the “Twitter Cramming” script is activated in Tampermonkey. Its developer precise that in the event of a change of tab, the script is deactivated and waits for the page to be reloaded.
Twitter won’t let you exceed 140 characters? Do you feel left out? Do not panic, @ 01net is there for you! Thanks to a Google Chrome extension and a script developed by @ Prof9, to you # 280characters. Welcome to the small group!https://t.co/BIfHyuwNP4

Once installed, the script will launch on its own each time you log into the Twitter web client. The official deployment of the 280 characters should take place gradually before being offered to all users of the social network.
