Broom through auto-starting programs

Do all kinds of programs start up when you turn on the PC without you wanting to? Then make sure that from now on they no longer start at the same time with Windows.

With Windows, all kinds of programs often start in the background. This is useful for some, such as the virus scanner or Dropbox/OneDrive. With other programs, such as Microsoft Edge or Spotify, this is often not necessary at all. You can start them yourself if you need them.

In Windows, use Settings to specify which programs are allowed to start when the PC is turned on.

  • Click the Start button.
  • click on Institutions, the gear icon.
  • click on apps.
  • click on Startup.

On the right are all apps with a description and a slider. Is the slider blue and it says “On” next to it? Then the app or program starts at the same time as Windows. There is also a message about the degree of influence on the computer. High influence means that the program hinders the speed of the PC more than little influence.

  • View the apps one by one. Not sure what something is exactly? Then look up the name of the program on Google.
  • Have you found an app that starts when you don’t think it’s necessary? Click the blue slider button to the right of the app. The slider will turn white, and it will read ‘Off’. The app will no longer start at the same time as Windows.
  • Is something turned off that should have been left on? Go through the above steps again and click on the white slider to the right of an app. The slider turns blue and the app is enabled again.

If you use online services such as OneDrive, Dropbox or iCloud, it is better not to disable associated apps. They can no longer do their job properly. In addition, it is also a good idea to leave your virus scanner on.
