Have you made a nice dish? Photograph it beautifully and share it with friends and family.
1. Provide good light
A nicely set table with candlelight is attractive, but not very suitable for food photography. It is better to photograph the dish in the white light of the kitchen, for example before bringing it to the table. Or ask a table companion to illuminate the dish with the flashlight function of his or her phone. In any case, don’t flash! This produces hard, flat photos.
2. Find the right angle
Some dishes look better from above. Pizza for example. Other dishes look better when they are placed diagonally from the top in the photo. Ideal for drinks, for example. A multi-layer sandwich or a juicy (veggie) burger might look better from the side. So you can see all the delicious layers of burger, sauce, tomatoes, pickles, and so on. It’s a matter of trying it out.
3. Mind the background
Is the composition okay? Then pay attention to the color combinations, neatness and other things that can distract from the beautiful dish. A green plate on an orange tablecloth swears and may not make for the best photos. And a used sauce spoon in the corner of the image also draws unnecessary attention. But a neatly set table with polished silverware, a pepper mill or some fresh herbs can add something to the photo.
4. Use an app
The phone’s default camera app isn’t always the best solution. It is set up for different situations such as portraits, landscapes or everyday use. An app like Foodie is specifically aimed at showing food as cheaply as possible. The filters allow you to create the tastiest or most realistic food photos. In addition, the app helps with the composition. Incidentally, the camera apps of modern phones often also have a special mode for food. It just doesn’t always give the nice result of a special app.
Watch the time
Finally, enjoy the food! Do not shoot for too long. The food gets cold and that would be a shame for the dish that is made with a lot of love. Moreover, it is not very pleasant to be busy with your phone while you can also have a nice conversation with a table companion.
