The Find X2 series from Oppo consists of two devices: the Oppo Find X2 with a suggested retail price of 999 euros and the more luxurious Oppo Find X2 Pro, with a price tag of 1200 euros. These are hefty prices and Oppo must also go to great lengths to convince people to choose the (in the Netherlands) less well-known brand.
Oppo Find X2 features
The Find X2 must be ready for the future thanks to 5G connectivity with the Snapdragon 865 chipset, it offers an advanced camera with three lenses (wide angle, regular and zoom) and is especially positive for the screen quality. The device is sturdy because of the 6.7 inch OLED panel and therefore not suitable for every hand or pocket: 16.5 by 7.5 centimeters. The Find X2’s screen is curved, has thin screen edges at the top and bottom, and has a camera hole in the top-left side to utilize the entire front for the impressive screen.
Because that screen panel is impressive. The OLED screen offers high-quality image quality and a refresh rate of 120 hertz, with a high 1440p resolution. So far this is the most beautiful image I have ever had on a smartphone.
Other notable features are the 65 (!) Watt fast charger, which can charge unheard of quickly. You see the percentage increase and within half an hour you are ready to spend hours with the smartphone. There is a fingerprint scanner under the screen and the device runs on the most recent version of Android (Android 10), with Oppo’s Color OS interface.

Missing items
For this price tag you can expect that nothing is missing, to stand out as positively as possible among the other high-priced smartphones. First of all, the device is not waterproof (IP-68). We also miss wireless charging, the possibility to expand storage capacity with a memory card, a headphone connection and dual sim support. With a device of this size you could not say that there is no room for these parts. The Find X2 does not have a strikingly large battery either.
Beautiful screen
About that screen. Do you regularly use your smartphone to stream videos on the go on YouTube and Netflix, for example, or are you a mobile gamer. Then this smartphone is definitely worth considering. You have stereo sound, but especially the OLED panel with QHD resolution, 120 hertz refresh rate and HDR support is not only beautiful in the specification list, the screen is also a real pleasure to look at. The camera hole in the top left corner is not fancy, especially with a screen panel like this, but not disturbing either. Especially if you activate night mode in Android, the black edge around the front camera is also less noticeable.
A bright screen, with a high refresh rate and QHD resolution, however, ensures high power consumption. The battery size of 4200 mAh is not above average. When you have the screen settings high and use the smartphone regularly, you will notice that a whole day of battery life is sometimes a bit difficult. As a result, I switched the resolution and refresh rate down in practice, because lower image quality is still better than a smartphone that cannot be used because the battery is empty. With these settings I got through the day without a problem with a charged battery.

Camera
Oppo invests heavily to make a name for itself in the camera field. And that pays off, as Oppo was last year together with Huawei the first smartphone maker with a periscope camera, which offers more zoom options. Such a camera can also be found on the Pro version of the Oppo Find X2, our regular version does not. There are three lenses on the back: a wide-angle lens (12 megapixel), a regular lens (48 megapixel) and a macro lens (13 megapixel), which gives you a variety of options for taking your photo. The regular lens is a well-known sensor, the Sony IMX586. It is also used in the OnePlus 7 and 7t series, but also in much cheaper smartphones such as the Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro.
Although the Sony lens is used by many other manufacturers, it is the software adjustment that makes a big difference. Oppo is perfectly fine, because photos are razor-sharp and detailed, especially in natural light. The camera has more difficulty in artificial light, where colors are often a bit too inflated and there is some noise. There is still something to tinker with. In low light, the camera is excellent, in fact, a photo shows even more than in real life. Without night mode. When you do use it, the photo is a bit sharper, so that even texts are legible.
The adjustment of the zoom lens and wide angle lens is also fine. In contrast to the iPhone 11 Pro, you will notice that the two extra lenses are slightly less strong in quality. So if you can use the main lens, you should always prefer that. Nevertheless, the extra lenses manage to capture enough color and detail for an excellent photo. It makes the Find X2’s camera setup versatile, and of good quality.

ColorOS
Like many other Chinese smartphone makers, Oppo has also rolled out a pretty drastic skin over Android 10: ColorOS. It does not look quite as you would expect from a smartphone in this price range. Text alignment is often out of order and the hard colors often make Android look a bit childish and unkempt.
Nevertheless, it should be noted that Oppo is taking the development of ColorOS more and more seriously. Apart from your own apps, there is little bloatware to be found, such as dull games or an unnecessary virus scanner hidden in the Phone Manager application. Also the performance does not suffer from the skin. The device responds quickly and I did not notice any dips. The fast refresh rate of the screen also ensures that you continuously have a smartphone in your hands that tries to break speed records. The 12GB of working memory is of course also not wrong. Hopefully, Oppo will also be able to extend the more serious approach of ColorOS to support, because, as with many other manufacturers, updates should be rolled out faster and over a longer period of time.

Alternatives to the Oppo Find X2
The price of the Oppo Find X2 is perhaps a bit too high, so there are many interesting alternatives to the Find X2. So you can get Samsung’s Galaxy S20 for a similar amount, a smartphone with similar features and a more trusted brand. The same applies to the cheaper Apple iPhone 11: a smartphone that is not comparable in terms of screen, but also a trusted brand and update support that is proper.
But also think of the OnePlus 7T, which also has a screen with a high refresh rate and a nice software, with a quick update rollout. A salient detail is that Oppo as OnePlus have the same parent company.
Conclusion: Buy Oppo Find X2?
The Oppo Find X2 is a good smartphone, which stands out for its excellent screen, absurdly fast charger and also has a lot to offer with its camera. Those who are eager for 5G in the near future are also ready for the future. Still, a few things are missing to justify the high price, such as wireless charging, expandable storage, dualsim, ColorOS and a 3.5mm port. As a result, the Find X2 may seem a bit overpriced.
