Keep WhatsApp conversations on new phone

A new phone? You have not lost the apps. Make a backup and they will be on the new smartphone in no time.


If you reset your phone to factory settings, delete WhatsApp or start using a new phone, your WhatsApp conversations will be lost. Do you want to have all apps and photos back? Put the backup you made in the re-downloaded app, and everything will be available again.

WhatsApp uses online storage services to keep a backup. On the iPhone, that’s iCloud. If iCloud is turned on, the backup is saved automatically. By default, iCloud is on with iOS 11 or later. If you still want to make a backup now just to be sure, read the tip ‘Backing up Whatsapp conversations’.

Restore the backup to a new iPhone or if the phone has been reset like this:

  • Download WhatsApp from the App Store.
  • Follow the instructions on how to access contacts and send messages.
  • Tap on Agree & continue.
  • Enter your phone number without the 0.
  • Tap on Ready.
  • You will automatically be notified about restoring chat history. Tap on Restore chat history.
  • Tap on Next one.
  • The app is being optimized. Type your name.
  • Tap on Ready.

The remaining WhatsApp files will be restored. The app can be used as normal again.

Android phones require a Google account from the user. The WhatsApp backup is stored on this Google account. So it is important to use the same account when installing a new phone. The conversations in WhatsApp are automatically backed up daily. If you want to backup now, read the tip ‘Back up Whatsapp conversations’.

Restore the backup to a new Android phone or if WhatsApp has been deleted like this:

  • Download WhatsApp from Play Store.
  • Tap on Agree & continue.
  • Tap on Get on.
  • Tap on To allow.
  • Tap again To allow.
  • Enter your phone number without the 0.
  • Tap on Next one.
  • Tap on OK to verify your number.
  • Tap on Get on.
  • Tap on To allow.
  • WhatsApp will send a text message to your phone with a verification code. This is automatically accepted by the app. Tap on To recover.
  • Tap on Next one.
  • Type your name.
  • Tap on Next one.

The remaining WhatsApp files will be restored. The app can be used as normal again.
