TomTom IndiGo: complete digital interface for car manufacturers

You probably know TomTom from the separate navigation systems and from the navigation software that it offers on them and in addition. Now the Dutch company comes up with something completely different. We are introduced digitally to TomTom IndiGo, a fully modular software platform that car manufacturers can use in their models.

TomTom IndiGo is a brand new, modular and therefore customizable software platform that car manufacturers could start using. This is not only about software that, for example, the infotainment system revolves around.

According to TomTom, TomTom IndiGo offers an interface with which the user can control not only things like the audio system, but also the climate control, settings of the car and many other things. TomTom IndiGo therefore actually merges with the hardware in the car and conjures up its images on the infotainment screen and, if desired, on, for example, the digital instruments. The fact that IndiGo integrates into the car also means that the system can be controlled not only via tactile buttons, including on the steering wheel if present, but also via voice and touch controls. TomTom IndiGo goes hand in hand with a network of app developers and service providers, which means that the platform is always evolving, resulting in new applications and therefore new functionalities.

TomTom’s software platform also knows how to find its way to your smartphone. This makes it possible, among other things, for the system to recognize the user on the basis of his or her telephone and to adjust its menus, applications and settings accordingly. It will come as no surprise that TomTom is bringing its entire arsenal of navigation software to the platform, complete with range and route information for electric cars. The system even connects so much with the software of the car itself that it can accurately estimate the remaining range, among other things, and even “[…] batteries can be set to charge faster.”

TomTom says it can supply its software platform ready-made to car manufacturers, although everything can be adjusted based on the manufacturer’s wishes, as mentioned. The company states that its system can reduce the development costs for car manufacturers of new software and hardware by up to 80 percent.
