The sale of used cars went like a train in 2020 and many used cars were also worn last year. Nevertheless, 2021 was just behind the year before, despite the long delivery times of new cars.
You would say that used car sales in 2021 went even faster than in 2020 because of the chip shortage and related long delivery times for new cars. Yet 2021 does not appear to have become a new record year. In total, more than two million used cars have changed hands: 2,008,222 against 2,025,564 in 2020. That means a slight decrease of 0.9 percent. In 2019, used car sales were still below two million.
As expected, sales of used cars by car companies to private individuals actually increased last year: from 1,285,166 to 1,333,971, a plus of 3.8 percent. The fact that the total number of used cars sold has remained below the level of 2020 is due to a significant decrease in sales between private individuals. It fell by 8.9 percent, from 740,398 in 2020 to 674,251 in 2021.
De Bovag concludes that the used car market has stabilized in 2021, but that private individuals are increasingly looking for used cars from a car company, rather than another private individual. This is a trend that has been going on for some time now. In the used country, the ratio between specialist trade and private trade is now about two-thirds versus one-third, while 15 years ago it was 55 percent to 45 percent. According to de Bovag, this indicates a growing need for security among private buyers. In addition, due to a lack of suitable used cars in the Netherlands, these are increasingly being obtained from abroad, with many private individuals wishing for professional help. They also want a place in their own country where they can get redress in the event of a defect or other warranty issue.
