With the iPhone 14 Pro, Apple seems to be saying goodbye to the notch. It will probably be replaced by a pill-shaped cutout for the selfie camera. This concept illustrates what that looks like.

Last week, Apple insider Dylandkt reported that Apple wants to hide the selfie camera on the iPhone 14 Pro in an oval hole. The sensors for Face ID would be placed behind the screen. The notch remains with the cheaper iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max.
After such a rumor, we naturally become curious what that looks like; an iPhone with a pill-shaped camera hole. So did designer Ian Zelbo, who created the above concept based on the rumours. On the left is the iPhone 13 Pro, on the right the iPhone 14 Pro shines in all its glory.
This design makes us happy. The cutout floats slightly below the top bezel and is much narrower, giving the pill-shaped hole on both sides a lot more screen space. For example, you can place more icons in the status bar and there may even be room for a percentage next to the battery icon.

Apple also changed something about the notch with the iPhone 13 models. The bite out of the screen has become twenty percent smaller, but the extra space is hardly used. To see the battery percentage, you still need to open the Control Center. With the pill-shaped cutout, Apple can store some extra elements. In addition, it looks – in our eyes – more aesthetically pleasing.
Reducing the notch isn’t the only thing Apple changes the look of. According to Apple leaker Jon Prosser, the iPhone 14 will have a thicker housing, so that the camera module on the back no longer protrudes. The new flagship of 2022 would also get round volume buttons.
Incidentally, it is not yet one hundred percent certain that the iPhone 14 Pro will have a camera hole in the screen. To make this possible, Apple needs to place the facial recognition components behind the screen – something that has never been done before. It remains to be seen whether the technology will be ready in time.
