The camera on the new iPhone 14 Pro is going to be big – literally and figuratively. Rumor has it that the camera island is getting bigger. An Apple insider says that this is because the camera is getting a major upgrade: the main lens of the iPhone 14 Pro has a sensor with no less than 48 megapixels.
iPhone 14 Pro gets bigger camera island
Last week, Apple leaker Max Weinbach shared detailed schematics of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. These show, among other things, that the camera bump is getting bigger. The current camera bump is 3.60 millimeters high; with the iPhone 14 Pro that is 4.17 millimeters. The width and height of the camera module also increase.
The fact that the camera island is getting bigger has everything to do with the new 48 MP camera. Renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said this on Twitter. He adds that the diagonal of the Contact Image Sensors (CIS) increases by 25 to 35 percent. The camera is also five to ten percent thicker due to the 48 MP lens.
Kuo has also repeatedly announced that the iPhone 14 Pro will have a 48-megapixel camera. That is a lot more than the iPhones of today: they have a sensor with 12 megapixels. The Apple insider previously said he believes the iPhone 14 Pro “takes smartphone camera photography to a new level.”
Pixel binning
The Apple analyst previously announced how the 48 MP sensor is likely to work. Under favorable lighting conditions, the camera shoots sharp photos. After all, with the 48 megapixels, more information can be squeezed into a photo. That produces more detailed pictures.
But a lens with more megapixels also has a disadvantage. The camera sensor remains about the same size, making the individual pixels smaller. These small pixels collect less light, so the quality of the photos is less good in low light.

To ensure that the camera still performs well in low light, the iPhone 14 Pro uses the so-called pixel binning† Several adjacent pixels are combined into one superpixel. For example, the iPhone also shoots good photos in poor light conditions, even if they are pictures of 12 megapixels.
