Hybrid technology is of paramount importance to both Toyota and Lexus. Since the market launch of the first generation Prius in 1997, the two brands have jointly sold 15 million hybrid vehicles worldwide.
In early 2017, Toyota proudly reported that it has sold 10 million hybrids worldwide since 1997. Three years later, Toyota and Lexus together managed to sell no less than 15 million hybrid vehicles.
Of the 15 million hybrids that Toyota and Lexus have sold worldwide, more than 2.8 million have found an owner in Europe. In any case, the two brands in our continent are good farmers when it comes to selling cars with electrical support. Last year, 52 percent of the cars sold by the two brands worldwide were equipped with hybrid technology, while in Europe as much as 63 percent of the total sales volume was a Hybrid.
Although Toyota and Lexus have focused in recent years in the field of electrification on hybrid technology, fuel cell technology (Mirai) has also been the focus for years. In addition, Toyota sells a fully electric version of the C-HR in China and Lexus launched an electric version of the UX, the UX300e.
Toyota reports that it will launch 40 new or renewed electrified models in Europe at least until 2025. This includes at least ten so-called Zero Emission models. In this case, therefore, fully electric cars or units with a fuel cell on board.
