Google has rolled out a new Android 13 beta for Pixel owners participating in the testing program. Three high-profile things have leaked in the update’s code: information about a facial recognition feature for the Pixel 6 series, a foldable phone from Google and the Pixel tablet.
1. Pixel 6 Face Recognition
Even after Android 13 has been officially introduced, members of the beta program will continue to receive quarterly updates. They are the so-called ‘Quarterly Platform Releases’. The new QPR 1 beta 1 update for Pixel phones that have been enrolled takes up 442 MB.
Still, we’re primarily talking about information discovered in the update’s code, rather than new features. For example, descriptions have been found about an upcoming update that will enable facial recognition on the Pixel 6 series, know that 9To5Google. Google gives users instructions and states that the function works best “in enough light and when you are not wearing glasses over a mask.
The Pixel 6 series uses its selfie camera in combination with the computing power of the Tensor chipset to accurately analyze your face. However, Google writes that facial recognition is still less reliable than unlocking with the fingerprint scanner of the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro. It was previously leaked that the phones would support this feature, but Google may not roll out the feature until after the Pixel 7 series launch on October 6. We expect that the new Pixels will work with facial recognition from the start.
2. Foldable Pixel
It is gradually gaining mythical status, the alleged foldable phone that Google is working on. At the end of last year it was announced that the production of the phone – the so-called Pixel Notepad – has been stopped, not much later it was resumed and ended again according to rumors. In July, a reference to the foldable Pixel appeared in the Google Camera app, and specifications of the foldable’s camera setup were leaked in the QPR 1 Beta 1 update.
The information was found by developer Kuba Wojciechowski who publishes it on Twitter. The main camera of the phone should be a 64 MP IMX787 sensor. There is also a 10.8 MP S5K3J1 telephoto camera and a 12 MP IMX386 wide-angle camera.
Still, the question remains whether these phones will ever see the light. We have to keep in mind that these specifications could also get into the Android 13 beta software without Google still actively working on the project. If Google would pick it up again later, it can of course still choose a different camera setup.
3. Pixel Tablet
What is certain is that Google will launch a new Pixel tablet this year, as the device has already been shown during the Google I/O conference. Wojciechowski has now found new animations about the tablet that show how it works in combination with its speaker dock. We see how the tablet is placed in the dock, and then it immediately starts charging. The logo of the Google Assistant can also be seen afterwards, because when it is in its dock it works as a smart display.
Calling with noise reduction
And finally, there are some smaller discoveries in the Android 13 QPR 1 Beta 1. Mishaal Rahman points out in a tweet to a new Security and Privacy menu. Furthermore, support for Bluetooth LE Audio and Spacial Audio is also part of the update, but the functions are not yet working properly.
Finally, a ‘Clear calling’ function has been discovered that allows your phone to filter out disturbing background noise while calling. Do you have a Pixel phone and will you continue to participate in the beta program now that the stable version of Android 13 has been rolled outd? Let us know in the comments. We explain here how you can participate and leave the program.
