Honda aims to achieve carbon neutrality across all products and operations by 2050. Big Red held a press conference today in Japan on its motorcycle business initiatives, presented by Kohei Takeuchi (Director, Executive Vice President and Representative Executive Officer) and Yoshishige Nomura (Managing Officer).

To immediately throw in the good news: Honda indicates that it will continue to develop the ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) in the near future, because it can be used electrically everywhere worldwide for a long time to come. Honda says it will continue initiatives to reduce ICE’s CO2 emissions to achieve carbon neutrality while meeting customer needs and usage environments unique to motorcycles.

Honda is also actively developing models powered by CO2-compensating fuels such as petrol-ethanol blends. In addition to the flex-fuel (E100, 100% ethanol) model released in Brazil, Honda plans to launch flex-fuel (E20, 20% ethanol) models from 2023 in India, one of the major motorcycle markets. bring and flex-fuel (E100) models by 2025.

Honda says it will accelerate the electrification of motorcycles, the main focus of its environmental strategies. The goal is to achieve carbon neutrality in all its motorcycle products by the 2040s and to remain the industry leader for the environment.

As the market expands, Honda will bring Honda electric motorcycles to market that cover a wide range of customer requirements. By bringing more than ten new electric commuter and pleasure models to market by 2025, Honda aims to achieve annual sales of 1 million electric motorcycles within the next five years, and 3.5 million (about 15% of total sales) from 2030.

As a solution to the widespread adoption of electric motorcycles issues related to travel distance and charging time, Honda has developed the Honda Mobile Power Pack (MPP) interchangeable batteries. MPP is very suitable for business use, such as the delivery of small packages. The Honda e:business bike series equipped with MPP is already being used by Japan Post and Vietnam Post, while testing is currently underway in Thailand.

For personal use, Honda plans to introduce two commuter EV models across Asia, Europe and Japan between 2024 and 2025. In view of the future market environment, applications and technological progress, Honda is exploring a range of future models for personal use, including models equipped with a power source in addition to interchangeable batteries.

More than 90% of the current global electric motorcycle market (approximately 50 million units) today consists of EMs (Electric Moped / Electric Moped / Moped Scooter) and EBs (Electric Bycicle / Electric Bicycle). In China, the world’s largest market, EMs/EBs are widely used as a convenient form of mobility, and Honda uses its local development speed strengths to develop products for this market.

As the EM/EB market grows globally, Honda plans to release five compact and affordable EM and EB models between this year and 2024, spanning Asia, Europe and Japan, in addition to China.

Finally, Honda is also actively developing electrified models in the Fun category, in addition to EVs for commuting. Based on the EV platform under development for the Fun category, Honda plans to release three major EV models in this category between 2024 and 2025 across Japan, the US and Europe. Honda will also introduce the Kids Fun EV model, designed to pass the driving pleasure on to the next generation.
