Swappable Batteries Motorcycle Consortium grows to 21 members

Founded in September 2021 by KTM, Honda, Piaggio and Yamaha, the Swappable Batteries Motorcycle Consortium (SBMC) has grown to 21 members in a short space of time. According to the Consortium, which focuses on replaceable batteries for electric motors, great strides have been made recently in the technical field.

Swappable Batteries Motorcycle Consortium grows to 21 members

Founded with the mission of accelerating the deployment of interchangeable battery systems by developing and promoting new common technical specifications towards global and open standardization, the consortium took vital steps in its first six months at an incredible pace.

The aim is to make the concept of exchangeable batteries operational, by facilitating their application and stimulating sustainable mobility. This came to the fore at the SBMC summit held in July 2022, with 40 of its representatives at the KTM Motohall in Mattighofen, Austria.

The SBMC meeting was the perfect opportunity to reflect on the progress made in the first semester of the consortium’s existence and to set the tone for future standardization activities.

The vision, strategy and functioning of the consortium have been established across the board from members, committees and working groups. The consortium had the right tools and instruments to realize its ambitions. The set of relevant technical specifications was agreed upon and the SBMC’s prototyping and standardization workflows were successfully kicked off.

Strategic positions were also taken, including acceptance of the SBMC as a formal liaison member of CEN-CENELEC and membership of CEN-TC301 and CEN-CENELEC JTC-13. Three European standardization organizations are officially recognized by the European Union and by the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) as responsible for developing and defining voluntary standards at European level: CEN, CENELEC and ETSI.

The consortium’s constructive approach allowed it to overcome the technical challenges of developing interconnected and compatible systems. The SBMC says it is on track to achieve its goals as planned and now counts on the best available expertise in the world to do so.
