“New Tesla batteries last for 1.6 million kilometers”

Tesla will be presenting a new battery pack for the Model 3 in China within twelve months. Not only should this battery pack be cheaper, it should reportedly last a million miles. Tesla CEO Elon Musk may reveal more details later this month.

By packaging the battery cells of the battery pack differently, the package can be produced cheaper and made lighter. In addition, they can be manufactured in larger numbers in this way. As a result, a Tesla Model 3 can be priced at the same level as (or even cheaper than) a comparable car with a combustion engine, sources say in the news agency Reuters. In addition, the battery pack should last 1.6 million kilometers.

Tesla will roll out the technology first in China and only later in the rest of the world. In time, other models of the brand will also receive this battery pack. The package developed in collaboration with the Chinese company Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited (CATL) has a higher energy density and therefore also a larger battery capacity. In addition, much less of the raw material cobalt is required. This mostly comes from the Democratic Republic of Congo, where child labor and poor working conditions cast a shadow over the mining of raw materials. CATL and Tesla think they will no longer need cobalt at all.
