Discount during off-peak hours
Tesla Superchargers, or Tesla’s fast chargers, have variable charging rates. Charging during off-peak hours is cheaper than during the day.
It actually seems to be a discount if you charge during off-peak hours, and not a price increase at busy times. That’s a good thing, because a kWh from a Tesla Supercharger has recently become considerably more expensive, like everything else.
Tesla cites a lower load on the electricity grid as an important reason for the move. As always, the rates at Tesla Superchargers are not too transparent, although Tesla drivers can view them in their car. Through such a Tesla screen, we do indeed already see a bar chart with crowds at the locations in the Netherlands. That is not yet linked to the rates, but in Germany it is already. For example, at a randomly chosen location in Moers, we find a rate of 55 cents between 10 pm and 6 am, compared to 74 cents during the day.
The flexible rate does not necessarily apply to all locations, but does apply to ‘several’ locations in the Netherlands. It also applies to Superchargers that are set up for EV drivers from other brands, which are all Superchargers in the Netherlands.
