Apple announced earlier this week that the App Store will be filled with advertising even more. Developers are angry now. It turns out that a large part of it concerns advertisements from casino apps.
Apple runs more ads in App Store
Apple announced this week that it will show more ads in the App Store. These can be seen in the ‘Today’ tab and under ‘More apps you might like’. This should make developers happy, as they can sell their apps in more places.
However, with a lot of casino app advertisements being placed in these places now, developers and Apple fans are anything but happy with this development.
Not everyone is happy with casino apps ads
Several prominent developers have taken to Twitter to complain about the casino app ads in their App Store. Among other things Marco Arment and Simon Stovring complained about these ‘unsavory commercials’ in the same feed as their apps.
Apple offers advertisers the option to show their ad in different app categories than their own app. According to these app builders, that’s exactly the problem. The ads for casino apps in the App Store appear in lists for unrelated apps.
Fierce App Store Criticism Leads to Nostalgia
The question is whether it is morally justifiable to show so many gambling advertisements in a place where many children and people with gambling problems will also come. For Apple, this new advertising option is a new source of revenue. The company now earns double from these casino apps; both through the advertisements and through in-app purchases. Spotify already complained about the latter earlier today.
The app developers are nostalgic for the days when Apple was still led by Steve Jobs. In August, Apple analyst Mark Gurman already knew that the company wanted to triple its advertising revenue. Apple has now actually implemented this. The tech giant has not yet responded to the angry messages. The same Gurman also reported that Apple Maps ads would be coming soon. Do you agree with Apple’s new profit model?
